Emulators seem to now be allowed on the Apple App Store but with some caveats

07 April 2024
Apple is loosening up its policy towards offering users outside content in apps, like game ROM files.

One less reason to choose an Android over an iPhone now. Thank you EU!

Kangal, 08 Apr 2024It's kinda sad, because the games are VERY low in grap... moreLOL.

PartTimePhoner, 07 Apr 2024I doubt people who want to emulate games would go to apple ... moreFunny because the only reason I choose the Legion Y700 over iPad Mini is because of the emulator support. If I live in EU, I might switch to an iPad Mini for this.
Don't get me wrong, I still prefer Android in most cases, but when it comes to this comparison, I prefer iPad Mini more because of it's longer software support + better UI (stock Android looks better on a phone but not on a tablet).
iirc you CAN sideload emulators on iPadOS, but it's more complicated than just installing .apk file on Android.

Anonymous, 07 Apr 2024Seeing how Nintendo is shutting down all the Switch emulato... moreIt's kinda sad, because the games are VERY low in graphical quality.

Almost 20 years old when you think about it. The graphics are in the same league as the 2005 console the Xbox 360. It's far slower and weaker than the Xbox One, let alone the PS4 Pro, a console that came out a few months earlier than the NSwitch. If we think of the NSwitch as a handheld it's pretty powerful, about the same standing as the PS Vita which launched in 2011, or the PSP that launched in 2004. But those last two devices were far more efficient, and they could comfortably fit inside a regular pocket. The NSwitch sucks as a handheld for that reason, it's more like a cheap 2DSXL in that metric.

I think NSwitch Emulation just hit a major speed bump, but it didn't hit a brick wall. The community will keep developing for it, until it gains momentum again. Meanwhile, Nintendo is getting away selling old franchises with 20 Years old Graphics at a full $60+ price (USD) or higher in some regions. They have no hope of attracting developers to their ecosystem when their costs and licencing is so prohibitive, and their next-gen hardware will be slower than some last-gen hardware.

At this point I think Nintendo should just quit. They should just make accessories, and instead sell their games on the iOS/macOS Platform, and also Cloud Streaming. They could potentially pivot into a software company and make much higher profits.

Well, my wishlist for 2024 is for an Apple iPad Mini 7.
Maybe one with a larger 8.7 inch screen, and an M1 chipset. And of course, running the latest iOS 18 version that allows Sideloading and Emulation.

Slap that baby inside a GameSir G8 controller, and you've got a great gaming device in your backpack. It's great for Apps and watching content too, portably. Just not good for getting any real work done, and that's for a modern 16in Windows notebook. Such a combination would allow me to mix in a Google Pixel 8 Pro, have my choice of Custom ROMs, and be able to also use it for gaming and emulation. Except this would be pocketable, since it's compatible with the Razer JungleCat controller (use case from Samsung Note 9). Then to finish things off, I would have a Desktop PC setup that's compatible with open-source (eg ZorinOS). And a proprietary device, in this case a PS5 Pro, for gaming on the couch. And yeah, I would have all my electronics needs met, since I have access to every major ecosystem from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Open-Source, and Proprietary.

This is probably just a precursor to allow game streaming services, not necessarily for emulators in what most people would think.

You can make arguments about people wanting high-end devices (which is where the iPhone could be a good option), but the fact of the matter is, they are still a minority around the world as a whole (where a new iPhone makes no sense).
