Marco M, 03 May 2024Xiaomi did better before, in my opinion. Adjusted for techn... moremeh, I didn't like the 11 series as much, the 10 series' processing was the real deal for me. The 10 series just coasted by on good hardware. 12 series improved the processing a little and 13 went one step forward. The 14 series damn near perfected everything. It's just a shame that Xiaomi has a problem with handling shots of people. The saturation, sharpness, contrast, etc. all are truly balanced now imo, like if that balance and maturity was shown in shots of people I'd say it would've been the best cameraphone, but yk, I take shots of myself and my family and friends a lot so it's important to me.
Also, yeah I hope Oppo gets globalized again, need more competition against Samsung, Google and Apple, and now even Xiaomi. If Oppo can release a phone that's even 100 euros cheaper, Xiaomi would HAVE TO lower prices.

The processing of the 11-series was wonderful. If only they kept building and improving on it. Instead came Leica and their color science. I don't mind the Leica modes being there. I just wish there was a normal Xiaomi mode also.
I think we will get to see more of Oppo internationally, now that they came to an agreement with Nokia. The Find X7 Pro seems very interesting indeed. But not with the curved display. I have curved display now, and I never want it again. ColorOS is also a bit meh, for me. Not a dealbreaker, but not inspiring either.

Marco M, 03 May 2024You summed it up very nicely in your last paragraph. Vivo t... moreI've watched a lot of comparisons and apart from oversharpening, I have no complaints about Vivo's processing. If there was a way to turn down sharpening and reduce the HDR algorithm's intensity, they would've had the perfect phone for me. Something between the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the X100 Pro is what I want but I move more towards the Oppo due to its balance. It has good landscape shooting capabilities, good portraits, good people shots, nice balance of contrast, sharpness and HDR, etc.
Vivo is too sharp, portrait isn't as good as Oppo's, HDR is too aggressive and noise reduction is too aggressive at times. Whereas Xiaomi's softness is perfect, but the photos I see of people are absolutely abysmal in portrait mode shots. Normal camera shots are fine but overall, Oppo's the best for me and I would've gotten one if it were globally available with a global ROM.
Honor is a Samsung-clone for me and Huawei feels artificial to me like Pixel and iPhones. Maybe it's just me tho. Just my opinions after all.

However, their camera performance isn't stellar across the board. So yes, to me their money should be spent on making the camera processing better, and not on gimmicky AI editing tools. Those things can come later, once the processing is best in class. Or at least near it.

Can't wait to see what the X100s Pro and X100s Ultra are priced like and what are the differences. I'm definitely interested in trying one of them, though I've never been too confident in Vivo's software, either Funtouch or OriginOS.

Marco M, 29 Apr 2024Just because it is baked into the price of the device doesn... moreOk so, what if, instead of building this feature they do the frankly immeasurable amount of things they could do with the finances?
To point out a few :
Using the money to finance improvements in factories to reduce costs for more profits, doing more research into other things like market research (which is pretty wasteful nowadays like what do people want? Just some good value in a phone and a phone that lasts long, the average consumer is happy with that, and more research isn't needed unlike back let's say a decade when no one really knew what they wanted, every android manufacturer provided something unique and so it was uncertain as to what the consumer actually wanted. Now all phones now sort of blend into each other.) or just pocket the extra finances they have and call it a day, having even more profits or distribute it out within the top executives in the name of costs.
What I'm saying is, this IS an extra feature for consumers that they can tangibly use, unlike the stuff I mentioned. More features is always great especially if they can be improved greatly like AI as processors get better on phones and more updates are released.
I'm not an AI user, I think it's a waste of time but this is Vivo, I have nothing much to complain about on their phones. Their top tier phones have some of the best camera hardware, good displays, good speakers, great battery life and charging, good performance even sustained as well, etc. Their processing is sort of unnatural in terms of sharpening and aggressive noise reduction but if they fixed that it'd be bordering on perfection along with the Zeiss Natural preset. And the only gripe I have is with their flagships not having variable aperture, if in the next 2 years they don't have this then YES, you are right, they wasted money on AI. But honestly, this is such an easy thing for them if you think about it in the grand scheme of things, VERY easy to market so your marketing costs are far less whilst you just spend your finances on operations. So, there's no need for campaigns for enthusiasts and the general population separately, 1 feature can easily be used to advertise to both, so yeah great in terms of a business perspective and since AI is the trend these days, they're just following the market.

So much power and potential wasted - selfie camera can't even record 4k 30fps. If selfie camera is only going to record in 1080p you might as well make it under display.

I love reality. I appreciate improvement in camera performance in smartphones - to better capture reality.
This does the opposite. Hence my question in a different post, are people so discontent with their lives that they happily use this type of deceitful AI editing tool.

Rosso, 29 Apr 2024It's playing the long term game, invest in AI now and ... moreThey could have spent this budget on training AI for better image quality. AI trained to reduce noise, but not making a smeary mess. AI trained to better capture highlights. HDR that doesn't look "HDR-ey".
Again, just about anything other than this would have been better.
This particular AI editing is a gimmick that promotes dishonesty.

I don't know why phones keep getting larger & larger & more useless in terms of ergonomics? I own a Vivo X70 Pro and that was a perfect 6.56 inch screen.
How can Vivo expect us to upgrade to these heavy, ungainly, imbalanced monsters? Probably gonna get a Samsung flagship with a smaller screen next! Ugh, a pity because the cameras are so good on Vivo phones!
