This is getting ridiculous.

Sam Carpenter, 03 May 2024Dude you really don’t know about backward compatibility…Do ... moreTell me you know nothing about backward compatibility without tell me you know nothing.

Dunno what are you yappin, but to run 32-bit apps natively, your processor itself needs to have 32-bit libraries, and Tensor G3 is no longer having 32-bit binaries. It's 64-bit exclusive, means you can't run 32-bit apps on it.

https://www.androidauthority.com/pixel-8-tensor-g3-specs-3331398/

Additionally, vendors can decided to disable the 32-bit at all on software level. That's why Pixel 7 series doesn't support 32-bit apps on it despites the fact that Tensor G2 still supports 32 bit binaries.

https://www.androidauthority.com/64-bit-only-smartphones-32-bit-support-poll-results-3242633/

The reason why desktop OS like Windows and MacOS has this kind of "backward compatibility" is because both OS has something called emulation layer, which allows you to emulate another CPU architecture even if your processor doesn't supports it (It's called WoW64 on Windows to run 32-bit apps and Rosetta 2 on MacOS to run x86-64 bit apps on Apple silicone Macs).

No need to be rude, geez.

Haven been using a 7a for a while now and I must say it's ok. It's reasonably compact while not being really compact in the full sense of the word. The software experience is great but not fantastic. It's still a bit boring when it comes to personalisation possibilities. The battery however isn't great at all, merely acceptable at best. It will get you through the day if you are a moderate or medium user but not if you're a heavy user. In power save mode it does a bit better but what's the point of having to town down the user experience to save battery to make it through the day? Google should again allow to change the form of the endlessly round widgets and/or allow third party packs to change it (however I'm not a fan of that either as in many occasions they are not working perfectly, not even in paid versions). Not having an SD card slot is also something I don't understand in a device that is marketed as a budget offering in the Pixel line (while it isn't really something to be called "budget offering"). An audio jack is also something that is missing (even if I, personally never use it). Will have to hold this one in my hands to see if it's worth it or not. Don't know that yet. On the other hand, buying it straight after the launch is also foolish as you probably can buy the normal 8 at around the same price of the 8a at launch. After 6 months it can be worthy of buying it if you are into pixel devices or you want a stock android experience with a very decent software support (To bad Motorola sucks at it as I would opt instantly for the Moto version of stockish Android)

i might move to pixel after this drop. it looks really good!

If over 550 euros, then we must burn Google at the stake. Tecno Camon 30 Premier is better than every phone in the price market and it does WELL better than S23 FE in battery life, thanks to TSMC 4nm as well as good software management.

TL;DR, if over 550EUR, avoid at all costs until it's under 430; on sale

Google Sleeps until 2025! Which is when you leave Samsung and start again... You're sad!! The funny thing is that they have money to produce excellent terminals and because of Greed they don't do it

                                - Premium design (smaller bezels, glass back)
                                - Better display technology (Higher brightness and refresh rate)
                                - Better display protection (Gorilla Glass Victus vs Gorilla Glass 3)
                                - Better ingress protection (IP68 vs IP67)
                                - Much better main camera (1/1.31" vs 1/1.73")
                                - Better ultrawide camera (Wider FoV, AF, 1/2.9" vs 1/3.1")
                                - Faster wired charging (27W vs 18W) and wireless charging (18W vs 7.5W)

There are other minor differences such as FOPLP vs IPOP packaging etc.

On the whole Pixel 8 is a much more well-rounded package than Pixel 8a, and at its current price point after discounts (i.e. $500-600), I daresay it is one of the best smartphones available. Pixel 8a has some glaring shortcomings.

So if I had to make the decision to launch only one product out of these, I would keep 8 and drop 8a. In case both of the phones are to exist, 8a should be at least 25% cheaper than 8 to make sense.
