Apple Pencil Pro brings squeeze and roll gestures, haptic feedback

07 May 2024
It's the most feature-packed stylus Apple has ever released.

Vlad, 07 May 2024It does. They literally list that on their website. No they do not. Under the compatibility section of the pencil pro, they list it as being compatible with the iPad Pro M4 (11" and 13") and the iPad Air M2 (11" and 13"). No other model is listed.

The roll gesture gives you precise control of the tool you're using - rotating the barrel changes the orientation of shaped pen and brush tools, as if you were using pen and paper. The roll gesture is enabled by a gyroscope fitted to the stylus.

Or when you use a fountain pen, the line thickness depends on how you rotate the pen. Apple seems to want to emulate those "effects".
Again, this feature could be useful for artists but not for casual users. Then again, casual user would get the non-Pro stylus or even an aftermarket one.

Can someone please explain what benefits the pencil with the barrel roll? AFAIK, using a normal pencil you don't need to roll it in order to change the orientation of a drawing line. Thank you

Anonymous, 08 May 2024Typical Android claimA hidden button and called it squeeze. Rolling gestures just like the Spen features.

[deleted post]Seriously, an Android tablet is cheap? Have you checked the prices of the Samsung S-series tablets? I currently use an Apple iPad Pro but will happily trade it for the new S-series tablets, considering how bad the software is. Apple has deliberately reduced the features that the hardware is capable of providing. Why is it so hard for some people to understand corporate greed? I need a good device that justifies the price irrespective of the brand.

Ouifuf, 07 May 2024Didn't the Samsung S pen already have this? Yes, and no.
Spen had a button to call Spen menu since the Note 2, I think. Not squeeze gesture but the functions are similar, and Apple could've just put a button instead. Being Apple, though, making things complicated is their way of life.
Spen supports hover preview not sure since when, though for sure Tab A 8.0 with Spen (2019) already support this.
No Spen support rotate gesture, though I'm not sure how it will help artists. For casual users, I don't think it would be useful.
As for haptic feedback, just check the comments in the previous news about this unnecessary "feature".

That's impressive tbh. Although, I don't feel that it makes a huge difference to the user experience.
