Anyone with experience using chinese version phones outside China? How bad is it? Or how much of a handicap is it compared to its global counterpart?
Thanks.

Look at this photo for instance, the bokeh balls are completely out of shape - This happens because the lens elements aren't circular to begin with.
Here's Sony's official animation to demonstrate what these elements actually look like, the top and bottom of these elements are cut off, hence "'D'ouble-cut":

Never seen background so fake before, far worse than that crap out of iphone cinematic video that looks like webcam background effect ppl use during video chat

It's worth noting that Vivo is the only smartphone manufacturer that uses an apochromatic lens for its telephoto camera - Virtually no longitudinal or lateral chromatic aberration towards the edges or in its bokeh, which is pretty impressive given how wide the aperture is.
With that said, I wish they used circular lens elements rather than D-cut elements for it - the bokeh balls look a bit off as they don't really look circular at all, although when shooting in macro this should be very difficult to notice due to strong background blur. All manufacturers apart from Apple seem to use this type of lens design for their periscope telephotos (Including Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei, Sony, Samsung etc.), and I guess it has something to do with the size restriction.

Olamilekan0001, 05 Jun 2024Those working in Vivo's company has a low level IQ, ho... moreLol. Don't be jealous. China itself is a huge market and just like most of the Chinese brands, it's flagships stays in mainland only.

yungfishstick, 05 Jun 2024This is probably the best telephoto I've ever seen, pl... more"I'd much rather have a shorter telephoto if that means it can still take good pictures in less ideal lighting."
The question is: What is a good picture? When I want to take a photo of a distant bird/distant object, then the image quality of the distant object is what interests me and not the image quality at pixel level (for example, see the first image of a black hole. Is that a bad picture because it is blurry? I don't think so.)
In that case, there is no noise advantage of having a larger field of view. Vivo could have used a 12.5 megapixel 340mm crop from the periscope camera and could have marketed it as a 340mm camera with a 12.5 megapixel 1/6.4" type sensor, f-number of 2.67 and Tetra²pixel array. Of course, the image quality of a distant object would be still the same in low light conditions.

Those working in Vivo's company has a low level IQ, how will they produce a top flagship like this and say it's not coming to store outside China, that's awful. If they allow it to go outside China, I'm sure they are going to make a huge sales with it. But the rate at which they think is so low 🔅.

Just noticed this but WOW, this white color is breathtaking. Looks like that cool Huawei Mate 40 Pro color, just a bit more subtle and refined, I love it. Only time I saw this color, everyone else uses the other colors like the black or brown-ish colors.

Don't even need to turn on a portrait mode, the natural bokeh is enough to fool most people into thinking it's a portrait mode shot/an actual dslr shot. The last shot looks like it was genuinely taken with a dedicated camera. My goodness phone cameras have come a long way. The Oppo and Vivo Ultras have differing philosophies yet still pump out photos nearly everyone would love, a sharpness controller on the Vivo would make it perfect. Xiaomi's non-human photography is amazing but I don't like the way they process people. Oppo looks natural yet is processed to look great. Great improvements, I remember when the Find X came out and everyone still dismissed Oppo as being gimmicky and how the
Vivo X60 Pro series and stuff were just considered decent "low cost" flagships. These companies have come a long way, beating the established players and standing toe to toe with actual dedicated cameras thanks to great features like the close focusing telephoto lens.
For example, compare this huge, 1/1.4" 3.7x to Samsung's 1/3.52" 10 MP 3x. Yikes.

Im so happy you guys are reviewing the Vivo x100 ultra!
Cant wait to compare the photos vs xiaomi 14 ultra as long as they are taken in your guys standard locations and angles we can get a pretty good idea of how well it compares vs the Xiaomi, I'm still thinking the Xiaomi 14 ultra is the best balanced camera phone yet, (even if im an owner of s24 ultra taking 3x shots really makes me think i could have done better with the xiaomi 14 ultra)... anyways lets see how good vivo 3 sensors with AI will fight the 4 awesome sensors of Xiaomi, lets gooo!
