I've had HTC Wildfire, the original one. It was actually not bad even though it was low end phone. What I resent HTC for was how quickly they cut off software support and that was in times where major Android updates brought huge changes and not like now. Their excuse was "the phone isn't capable of running Honeycomb". I've later flashed it with some custom ROM and it ran really well. I even overclocked it later and my mom then used it for many years until the phone died of old age. That was after I was so fed up with Samsung phones which were far more capable at the time but had the most bizarre issues in the world.
HTC today is a shadow of former self, just like Nokia. They are both producing bunch of generic, forgettable phones with nothing exciting about them. And when you have phones with longer software support in this segment, why would you pick HTC except for nostalgia reasons. But a 500€ mid ranger that's made entirely out of plastic and doesn't really have anything that stands out, hello?!
HTC should be doing the flagship killer thing. It may not be ultra profitable, but is what makes people interested in your brand again. Not forgettable low spec mid rangers.

Granted I hadn't realised how upmarket BBK had become (last year's OP11 is 650 still), but you can also get a Pixel 8a for 450 (for all the hate Tensor gets, everyone I know has no issues).

I'm not convinced about that. I might agree about Samsung, though it's not like their phones with equivalent hardware are any cheaper. I don't trust Xiaomi and BBK much for software update. Nothing looks promising, although it's still relatively a new company.

As a long time HTC smartphone user, ending with the U11. I really hoped for a flagship spec'd smartphone. I'll take the U24 PRO over what's offered by the carriers these days. It's a Samsung or IPhone and there's a huge drop-off with the mid tier phones from Samsung and nonexistent with Apple. It's forced me to purchase a Sony Xperia 5 IV that I'm currently quite pleased with as it offers features simular to the M8. SD card is important to me personally. The front facing speakers too. I still have my HTC phones the EVO, EVO 3D,EVO 4G LTE, M8, 10 (I skipped the 9 cuz the M8 is just that good) U11. I switched to LG for the G8, G8X AND V60 and then they quit. Samsung wants to be Apple and Apple don't care about their customers wants and wishes so until HTC can put out something to compete in the flagship tier I'll stick with Sony.
