Nokia Asha smartphones receive a major software update

On a side note, I couldn’t help but notice that Apples new Iphone iteration due for an Autumn release features something very similar to Jolla’s ‘ambience’ function – coincidence, I think not. In IOS7, it appears that by changing the wallpaper on the homescreen, you also change the look and feel of the phone which seems (like the ambience feature in Sailfish) to reflect the colours in your wallpaper image.
A lot of the other features in IOS7 seem to have been heavily influenced by MeeGO, Web OS and many other operating systems. There go Apple again taking from others and calling it their own!
So let’s support the real innovators and help get Jolla up there with the big boys!

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2013I see the person from the location "GT6G" is very... moreHaha.
Actually, I use my Z10 most of the time. Before that a Samsung and before last week, hadn't owned/used a Nokia for about 3 years. If I'm a fan of anything, it's the technology. I am a fan of the Symbian os, not for the UI mind you, but the efficiency of the kernel in resource utilization and management. I see the same thing in the Asha 1.0 platform on the 501.
Look at the just the power specs.
Power Management (official specs from Nokia website)
Battery model: BL-4U
Battery capacity: 1200 mAh
Battery voltage: 3.7 V
Removable battery: Yes
Maximum 2G standby time: 1152 h
Maximum 2G talk time: 17 h
Music playback time: 56 h
Look at the size of the battery. It's got 1152 hours standby time. That's incredible.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, if the Asha 1.0 os was ported to run on one of the Lumia smartphones, performance wise it would blow WP8 out of the water.
More competition is good for us consumers. I don't know about you, but I don't want an Apple, 1 model fits all market approach to consumer electronics.

AnonD-133355, 06 Jul 2013Dude. Asha doesn't support true multitasking. Before statin... moreWell, "Dude", I am using the device. Bought it last Saturday in Thailand.
Here's what you do, go to your home page, scroll down to the 9th row, 4th icon is "Line". Should ask you if you want to download the application. Press "Yes", now navigate back to the home screen and open any other application while Line is downloading.
Does the download complete? Why yes, "Dude", yes it does. Why is that? Because the OS is single threaded or multi-threading processes? Don't worry "Dude", you're not the first person who doesn't understand the technology for a device your using.
However, given that information is posted about the Asha 1.0 os utilizing Smarterphone at the kernel level (in Nokia press releases no less), seems it would be pretty easy to figure out what's going on regardless of whether someone owns the phone.
For those interested, info about what Nokia bought with the Smarterphone acquisition 2 years ago:

Any of those games or features listed look familiar on your 501? Hmmmmmm......

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2013multitasking is now much better on android and it is real! ... moreDude. Asha doesn't support true multitasking. Before stating any facts or posting link, use the device to comment. I am using it now. So i know. Even Nokia didn't claim for true muktitaskin, how can you?
Read the gsmarena review carefully before guiding me.
And yes i am talking about those cheap 50$-100$ android phones. I am not competing Asha 501 with GS4.
Android is much better than earlier, specially in Android 4.2. Yes it is but it is nowhere near to Symbian when it comes to multitasking. Me- User of a pureview 808 and Galaxy S3. Just use a symbian device, you will know what multitasking is.
Well again I will tell Android is much better than Symbian and Ashas.(but not in every aspects).

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2013multitasking is now much better on android and it is real! ... moreGood points.
I've said before and I'll say it again, the real test of a multi-tasking OS is it's ability to efficiently manage resources while running multiple applications (swapping out idle applications, no memory leaks, etc.).
As has been pointed out by many, many people and only trolls try to dispute, Symbian was the best at this. I suspect that if Nokia engineers who once worked on Symbian are now working on Asha, the Asha platform has a great deal of potential. Look at platform v1.0 and the resources available on the Asha 501.
With true multitasking, is there any question that the Asha 1.0 platform is more efficient than either Android or WP8?
Oh, if you're thinking about labeling me as an Asha fanboy, forget it. I currently use a Blackberry Z10 and before that was a happy S3 owner.
Give Nokia credit for their efforts. If they finally get their OS development organization and strategy figured out, we as consumers will be the ultimate winners as we'll have another product choice.

"The new Asha Platform that Asha 501 is based on brings together three operating systems, Series 40 that has been used in all other Asha phones so far, Smarterphone( which Nokia acquired in 2012 and Meego (the OS that Nokia developed along with Intel and abandoned it to choose Windows Phone)."
