They even patent ridiculous things like rectangle with rounded corners that existed even biblical times. They apply for every patent they could imagine for the purpose of stifling innovation. Yes, patents are meant to protect one's ideas but Apple had been abusive in using the patent system.
No wonder Apple popularity diminished as a result of its actions. If you still don't believe, go check Apple stocks and see for yourself how it went down the slope.

Apple couldn't sue anyone without those patents. Generally, the first company to create an idea or design, patents it. Stop and think about that for a moment.
