this ... moreThe point you mentioned regarding Apple of being competing with itself helps it in a way that it will always try to improve its OS more than other because it cant go away from this OS. Not like other OEMs where they have option to scrap the existing OS(Android) and switch to another, in case it started performing bad or hitting their devices in negative sense.
Being single iOS developer and OEM for the same, they are more strive to perform and delivered better than what is being expected from numbers of other OEMs and OS developers. This closed system manufacturing also helps them to develop products which they think will be suitable for end user rather than tweaking the phone depending on the OS version and features.
Like said many times before, it is a war between a single man army and a troop of soldiers. And being able to sustain till here, we can hope some very big surprises from this cupertino giant.

A friend of mine received the update while I am still waiting :(
The only difference is that we both bought our lovely HTC One's from different retail shops

you actually missed the point i think.
this is exactly what apple is missing. yes, on the software side, Android due to having so many OEMs, you can have delays etc in release of the software but it will come eventually.
but the question is to you: how many OEMs does Apple have? one, which is Apple itself. and this is the reason exactly why the Apple hardware has not improved drastically over time and even the software has not been pushed to its limitations. because there is no competition really. Had apple, the software developer, had its software to offer to multiple OEMS, the software you are seeing now would have been better and more advanced because of OEM pressure, not to mention the hardware from various OEMs competing to use the apple software. you would have seen a 5 inch apple already 2 years ago. you would have had apple phablets also. you would have had excellent camera technologies from the likes of nokia..you would have surely, on the software side, had much better mapping service.
Apple tries to create one size fit all which does not work for everyone. Android is more of having various sizes to fit everyone.
not bashing apple here as i believe they have a great product but its not for everyone. they have their strong points but Android have theirs also.
HTC one is my first droid ever but im liking it alot (infact i would say its the best phone ever i sued). its more open..you dont need to go through itunes for everything..you dont need to get ripped off for a movie paying $ 10 for rental and buying is double that and thats only if you are in North America as many other regions dont even have those services whereas you can torrent on Android. you can find apps that will never be allowed on apple.Google itself has superior mapping system/social services etc which apple doesnt come close to. then you mix that with what OEMs can offer like HTCs/samsungs/hopefully Nokia in the near future on Droid/sony , then you get a super phone. even on the software level, those OEMs are pushing the boundary and coming up with technologies that Apple cant compete with. in a nutshell,this is what apple misses and this is why millions in the last 2 years have flocked to Android...because its more versatile and you can get it in various price levels.
