It is better for Samsung to upgrade its own products rather than using Google's. This would create a trademark.

Since Galaxy AI only arrived on flagships, does that mean the Bixby on midrange phones will be just as useless as ever?

Darth Caesium, 11 Jul 2024Dear Samsung, No one gives a shit about Bixby. Just remo... moreYou clearly have no idea do you?

Samsung has 3 LLM related to their OWN AI and have collaborated globally with and without Google. How do you think they've done so well with Google's Gemini in the first place and rolled out so quickly across so many variable versions of devices and firmwares?! Yeah they VERY much know what their doing!

Note they've rolled out AI long before ANY of the competition in this modern era.

I'm personally glad it'll be primarily their OWN first and foremost as they'll be implementing their own Knox protections throughout the hardware and software stack. But the option is there for others. I've yet to see Gemini fully replacing Google Assistant without fiddling behind the scenes.

I simply think that Samsung is making a mistake because they definitely lack the skill, datacentres and manpower required for generative AI, and their failures with Bixby in the past don't make them look any better here. Google Gemini is not great, and makes plenty of terrible mistakes, but it's definitely better than whatever Samsung could come up with. Plus, Google at least has some likelihood of fixing its glaring issues, and the multi-modality of their LLM allows them to use the same model all across the board, in an interconnected, coherent ecosystem. Said idea of an ecosystem does concern me, but it's also much more comfortable to use, and at the end of the day, that's the whole point of on-device generative AI anyway — it's a comfort and productivity tool.

It is mostly making headlines for terrible interpretations. Like, Siri on steroids, obviously not in a good way. Secondly, there are serious data privacy and security concerns with how Google handles any type of data. For instance, they are often treated as suspiciously as services like Zoom, TikTok and whatever Huawei will start a new spin-off brand for next time. Several European countries do not allow Google services to be used in official/public services.

That is very likely the main reason Samsung is and always has spent so much effort on creating their own smart and AI assistant ecosystem. Because, at some point Google could very well find themselves in the same spot as Huawei.

Darth Caesium, 11 Jul 2024That's a fairer assessment. I'll still personally... moreSometimes it is not quantity that is better, but quality. And the quality will only be better after merging Google with Samsung. In the world there are many phones and watches manufacturers, but anyway the best is just three: Apple, Samsung and probably need to say Google. All others just China's which tries to conquer the market. Why to have many assistants if anyway will be just Google one good for android and probably Apple's Siri?

Darth Caesium, 11 Jul 2024First of all, fix your broken English, because I genuinely ... morePut all the blame on Google, who you praise so much. Because I use a translator because my language is not English and I don't speak English. Second, Bixby was never good and it is not now, but Samsung is creating many beautiful things now with Google, these are two companies that lead the world in the field of technology. I'm talking about phones, watches, etc. This area. I don't understand why Samsung has to rebuild Bixby when you can use the Google base and have an improved Bixby with Google integration? After all, Google was a sucker for Wear OS and the watch until it partnered with Samsung, which closed its Tizen OS for the watch and is now working with Google. Everyone wins. Xiaomi, Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, etc. Integration is good, it is the joining of two to create something good in common.

I'll still personally disagree with you, but only because Samsung will almost definitely make it un-uninstallable, since they absolutely still love to do that even if they've stopped doing it as much as they used to do. More voice assistants to choose from is always great, as there is more competition, and more competition leads to more innovation and better products for consumers to choose from.

Google is partnering with Samsung and I think this is the best thing that could have happened. Samsung has Bixby, it's a normal assistant. Will integrate with Google, great. Also how did Google integrate Samsung's One UI into Wear OS? It's called collaboration and I don't see anything wrong with two companies coming together to create amazing things. So the integration of Google into Bixby will only be better for Samsung users who use it.

Secondly, if Samsung had had a good track record with Bixby in the past, I would've loved to see this, but Samsung has always been terrible with voice assistants and AI, which is why they've been relying on Google so much with generative AI features on their phones instead of making it themselves.

Also, I used to use Samsung products, and I know plenty of people including family members who still use Samsung (and insist on using it just because they "can't get used to anything else"), and literally not a single one of them has ever liked Bixby. I used to use Samsung until 2021, and I can tell you that it was never great, or good, or even acceptable.

Google is definitely going to have a great all-in-one on-device assistant for text, voice, images, videos, etc. with Gemini because it's multi-modal. Frankly, while I don't have much faith in Google with generative AI, I have zero trust in Samsung over this issue, and Bixby is definitely going to feel clunky and out of place because of Google's pre-existing ecosystem that Samsung is already extensively using. Had Samsung decided to have its own on-device generative AI assistant, then I wouldn't be complaining anywhere nearly as much.
