I love the sharp square design, but I honestly don't think there's much story to tell here 😂
Huawei/Honor on the other hand, now that's a brand I'd be very interested in hearing the design story behind all their beautiful smartphones.

Wouldn't it be more difficult to open the foldable if there isn't anything for your fingers to grip? Laptops usually have a notch/niche in the lid for this purpose only.

what story behind the design? my guess it goes like this:
so, we like money... nope, scratch that... we LOVE money, therefore we decided to keep the same design as the 2 previous models with slight changes... and, oh yeah!! we raised the msrp into the 6th gen product because we're sammy and we do what makes us richer.

A flat edge isn't deciding this, the material and texture of the frame, the mechanics of the hinge, those things decide how easy or hard it is to open. All hands-on reviews I've seen say the hinge is the best they've made so far. This while making it more resistent to elements.

Darth Caesium, 12 Jul 2024Which is even funnier because the Z Fold6's corners ar... moreI'm not surprised why they're desperate enough to force cash burners to trade in their collectible Galaxy S i9000, just to get a Z Flip6 for free via an AT&T contract in the US.
That alone is enough to prove how their current slabs lack any form of personality.
Same with the lack of identity with their designs, as all of their phones (including flagships and tablets) are designed and manufactured by either Huaqin, Wingtech, Coosea group or Tinno.

I personally have no problem with Samsung using 19.5:9, even if I personally prefer 20:9 and also think Samsung did it just because Apple uses it. It's clearly an attempt at differentiating themselves from non-Apple phones. I don't mind either aspect ratio, and 20:9 would be more advantageous to them because their foldables, and especially the Z Flip series — which would look downright comical when folded — would have less useability issues. Just because of the foldables, though, I would suggest Samsung switches to 20:9 actually. It's not a point I would've thought about had you not replied to me, so thank you a lot.

justasmile, 12 Jul 2024TLDR: We made the Z fold 6 look like the S24 Ultra without ... moreWhich is even funnier because the Z Fold6's corners are not completely unrounded, unlike the S24 Ultra; and the Z Flip6's bezels are ginormous compared to the S24+. Also, the Z Fold6 doesn't have an S-Pen slot, doesn't come with an S-Pen, requires a special S-Pen for the inner screen, and you cannot use an S-Pen on the outer screen; the Z Flip6's resolution is not 1440p; and neither foldable has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
Thus, neither phone can even make a clear attempt at being their respective clones. It's ridiculously laughable.

BS story. The completely flat frame actually makes it particularly difficult to open up the Z Fold6 into tablet mode. Neither of these phones embody Samsung's brand identity properly either, because the Z Fold6's camera circles have a different — and worse — aesthetic to other Samsung phones, and both phones have a different aspect ratio to 19.5:9.
Samsung themselves have lost a lot of what gave their phones a brand identity. This is what Samsung's brand identity should be (some of them are no longer as such either because of Samsung's stupidity or because it genuinely evolved away from it):
•Curved edges
•Curved frame
•Curved screens (thankfully gone now)
•Symmetrical, very thin bezels
•Matte design (frame, back, even screen now) (Samsung switched from glossy to this, but I think it works just as well)
•Rounded corners (think of the S24's corner radius, which has been a staple of their phones for a long while) (the Note10 series, the Note20 Ultra and the S22 Ultra-S24 Ultra all break this, and I don't think they should've been made like that)
•26mm lens for the main camera and selfie, with other sensors working off of multiples of 26mm (unfortunately no longer the case except for the selfie)
•19.5:9 aspect ratio
•Metal ring (or plastic if budget phone) around each camera sensor
Unfortunately, Samsung cannot implement all of this because they're too busy trying to copy Apple's design language. Samsung phones were once bold, with defining features in their aesthetic that kept them distinct from other phone manufacturers. I really like that they're using the same design language for all of their phones now, with their budget phones having the same key design, but it's not great that said design looks drab and dull, and the flatness of the design poses ergonomic problems too. The S21 series was really where Samsung's designs and aesthetics peaked, even if the S21 and S21+ were stagnating in most other areas while the S21 Ultra got to enjoy some significant upgrades.
