Apple opens up iPhone NFC in iOS 18.1 even to developers outside the EU

There is, however, a catch (as is often the case with Apple).

The want additional fees for hardware the user already payed...

Imo NFC use has been quite underutilized on both platforms. I remember in the early days, how it was advertised to be able to do a lot of things, including inter-device connectivity, access card replacement, etc. Fast forward today, most people still only use it for wallet payment, nothing else. And the support is quite limited as well, even on Android, as many markets ended up using QR codes instead.

I mean if you ask a lay person, Apple "opening up" iPhone NFC probably don't change anything.

Maria, 15 Aug 2024Please, (Android) do not follow Apple's step. Android isn't a person or a brand. Tell that to Google and others. But don't worry they won't do it. NFC is open for many years now.

So paying Apple the fees maintains "security and privacy of users", right? What a world we live in.

this is ridiculous. Android has given developers free, unrestricted access to NFC for years, and have there been any privacy or security concerns? **no!** Apple is just fear-mongering among their fans and maliciously complying with EU regulations so they can remain a monopoly in the smartphone market. this is why I tell people not to buy iPhones, they're anti-consumer.

They're charging big prices with massive profit margins for the phone hardware, when selling them to people. Then they will now try to charge developers massive amounts to be allowed to write software to utilise that hardware the users already own, forcing developers for double charge the hardware owner for the hardware, to be able to make a profit themselves...

This is why Apple is on the brink of getting completely trade banned in the EU and probably a lot of other places in the world. This is pure distilled antitrust.

apple has been boring for so many years now, can we get a new ceo whos not scared of taking risks zzz

EU has been right about C port as standard but way OVERREACHING and trying to control as if it is their OWN product.

Very good. Again “EU repairs Apple”
