I just tested the Pixel 9 Pro XL in a store again.

The 42 megapixel resolution of the selfie camera is only marketing! There is no option to take full resolution photos with the selfie camera! It also seems that zooming with the selfie camera always uses pixel binning because zooming from 0.7x to 1.5x only gives you 2.5 megapixel dng files despite decent light conditions. The true resolution (dng file) you can use is 10.0 megapixel. Just embarrassing! Google did the same thing with the Pixel 6 Pro: Advertised two 50 megapixel sensors, but only used them in pixel binning mode, even when you zoomed.

By the way, even the main camera of the Pixel 9 Pro XL doesn't give you 50 megapixel dng files, but 46.8 megapixel, if I remember correctly.

I hope the Pixel gets spun off into a separate company. Its ties to Google is stifling its developing.

"The camera system is very similar to last year's Pixel 8 Pro - but the ultrawide angle camera has a significantly brighter lens, and the selfie shooter sounds like a big upgrade at 42MP."
It's actually a very different camera system because as I said, I tested it in a store and the 9 Pro XL uses pixel binning for 10x-30x zoom photos (significantly worse dng files in the default 12 megapixel mode because you only get roughly 2.5 megapixel at 10x even in good light conditions, Pixel 7 Pro/8 Pro don't have this issue) and the periscope camera has a new lens (focal length of 17.906mm instead of 18.0) and it's possible that the new lens is worse because even in the 50 megapixel mode, dng files at 15x seem to be slightly worse than the dng files of my 7 Pro. I also tested that the new tele lens doesn't have macro capabilities.

The ultawide angle camera has a 2.02mm f/1.7 lens, this means that it should capture roughly 8% more light per exposure time from an object than the 8 Pro, not really significant. But it would be interesting to test the macro performance of the new lens.

The 42 megapixel selfie camera has a 2.71mm f/2.2 lens and has a wider field of view, but it should theoretically capture only approximately 98% as much light per exposure time from your face as the previous selfie camera. I haven't tested the selfie camera yet.

It really doesn't matter, the so called features are just Google trying to distract.

I haven't checked all but more than 98.7654321% sure that ALL, ALL phones that offer 16Gb Ram, start at 12Gb with 16Gb being the top memory option

ALL models that offer 16Gb Ram have far superior SoC than Google.

If the Tensor G4 can handle 16Gb Ram you can see why Google will only limit itself into how much better the 9 us over the sub par Google 8.

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2024I doubt you can get smooth performance on your S24 when emu... moreEh, piracy never dies. You do realize that the moment Citra and yuzu were discontinued, so many forks appeared with new features and support. Not to mention that-
                        1. Emulation of Nintendo till 3DS is insanely good with consistent 50-60 fps on androids, only switch emulators are locked to 30 FPS which is still good enough.
                        2. All the games are freeeeeeeee that you can play on your phoneeeeeee, so you don't need to carry another deviceeeeeee with you.
                        3. Not just nintendo, you can emulate PSP and the likes and play those games.
And this is not just samsung, it's a staple feature for every android. Not to mention sideloading apps like ad-free youtube(newpipe, revanced, etc) along with modded apps for stuff like spotify. Most of the amazing FOSS catalogue is also available on android, and you don't need to root(jailbreak) to install these apps.
Also don't even talk about security and such, you can very well not choose to sideload apps on android and just stick to stock playstore. Your security won't be compromised, unlike the agenda that apple tries to shill. Both have dogsh!t privacy anyways.
Funnily enough, the best privacy phone you can have in this day and age is a pixel with grapheneOS as a custom ROM, it is by far the most secure and private smartphone you can have in this day and age. And you can only get grapheneOS on a pixel, because pixel is the only phone manufacturer that has the hardware for having a privacy oriented phone.
                        4. There is no better camera when it comes to Apple, Samsung and Pixel, it all boils down to preference of sharpness, shade, AI enhancement, etc. One performs better than the others.
                        5. Also google/samsung is kicking ass of apple when it comes to innovation so yeah there's that.
                        tl;dr Android >>>> Apple

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2024You can also buy a new #TeamPixel 8a for $499 with amazing ... moreThe 8a is a rip off lmao, nobody should buy that phone.

Gsmarena, it would be good, if you could mention in the review that dng files at 10x zoom (in the default mode, not 50 megapixel mode) (as well as live photo video frames) use pixel binning, so the resolution of the 10x dng files is very low (roughly 2.5 megapixel) in all light conditions. Pixel 7 Pro/8 Pro don't have this issue. Google needs to fix this!

The 2x mode doesn't have this issue and gives you 12.5 megapixel dng files.

All "influencers" use iPhones to record their vlogs. I personally prefer Pixel cameras and the 'a' series cameras are on par with vanilla iPhones.
