Can't realise why apps dictate what's the best OS, not the OS itself. :)

Writing from Nokia c7.
This is nothing special, but a futile attend by Nokia from losing its head after abandoned Symbian OS(Nokia's own Kingdom).

AnonD-156746, 19 Jul 2013it was very difficult to develope apps for it,it needed a l... moreIt is difficult only if you are a lazy person. It is not difficult at all. I imagine that you were afraid of C++. You are perfectly able to build apps in less than a week.

You might want to change the title to "Nokia updates its offline Maps Suite for Symbian and Meego". I want to post here a method of how to download your maps for offline use directly on the Meego phone. The solution works 100% so you will never have the issue of being asked to check online for the map.
1. Clear your Mydocs/cities/diskcache from your N9 mass storage
2. Enter Nokia Maps application and click Check for updates(this should download the latest catalog which is located at Mydocs/cities/MapLoader/catalog-00.02.50.103.xml). Open this file to see the correspondence between country-number or continent and number. For example 2.zip = Europe; Europe.zip = POI of Europe. etc.
3. Retrieve the map zip file you need from http://static.maploader.maps.svc.ovi.com/map5/maploaderzip-00.02.50.103/NUMBER_OF_ZIP_FILE.zip
4. Extract it to Mydocs/cities/diskcache
5. Retrieve the POI zip file you need from http://static.maploader.maps.svc.ovi.com/map5/maploaderzip-00.02.49.104/CONTINENT.zip
6. Extract it to MyDocs/cities/diskcache/ClientIndex/

This just shows the commitment Nokia gives to its users. Now , about the OS itself , we'll go back to the time when they brought out 5800 (2008).
Honestly , at that time Nokia had no expertise on touch UI (7700 was a flop) , which takes years to perfect and master.
Now when you're lagging a year behind the world's best touch phone (iPhone was launched in 2007 by Apple) what do you do to counter a rising threat ??
The quick fix formula for success was to port existing Symbian S60 3rd edition UI and apps to the new phones and give them touch capabilities. So they did it , but the result was a unfinished , slow system also brought down by a lowly 128 MB of RAM.
Then came 2009-2010 , which saw phones like Satio , Vivaz and N8. All had 256 megs of RAM so those memory full error messages were history.
Even so , as Nokia had made most of S60 5th ed phones with 128 mb RAM , they improved it with N97 mini. Since I owned and used both a Satio & an N97 mini , I could say that in spite of having more RAM and a powerful CPU , the system felt much faster in the latter. For the record , Satio had a Cortex A600 MHz chip while N97 was equipped with only a 434 MHz ARM CPU.
This failed attempt is still an engineering lesson to Android phone makers that its not just a powerful spec-sheet that makes a phone HIT , but a carefully crafted piece of software that works around the hardware and utilizes it efficiently. Come on guys , Apple has also been trying to teach us the exact same thing so why aren't we listening ??
Now about the whole more apps thing. Honestly speaking , the iPhone popularized this whole "there's an app for everything".
Quite a few apps that we use today are just shortcut specialized links to websites. Now can't you do it by just typing the URL of the mobile version of the website ??
What is it that people do most with their smartphones these days ?? The prime reason people buy touchscreens is to surf web & play videos. Admit it. Who has the time today to engage in gaming except for the kids... ??
If you were to ask me , Symbian just needs to update their video player with better codec support and then see people rushing to buy a Nokia. That's what Samsung has done for ages now. Add an improved keyboard to complete the picture.

Now that Symbian is a nice working OS, Nokia let it die. What's the problem in keeping it up beside WP and the S40/Asha platform?

It was still a capable Operating System. The only downfall was that it did not have all the new apps, like Android and iOS do. If Symbian gave it more time and effort than Windows, it would have succeeded.
The Belle update was amazing, and brought it closer than ever to a smartphone experience. With Symbian, a Nokia N8 with an ARM11 processor at 680MHz can record videos at 720p HD at 30fps.
Android with ARM11 at 800MHz can only support upto VGA at 15fps (look at the ZTE Crescent). I understand that it's upto the phone's sensor, but Symbian being able to shoot HD with an ARM processor is what you can optimisation.
Symbian forever. ;)
