Duke, 21 Aug 2024The problem with this is we know all lithium ion batteries ... moreNope, a li-ion battery can live much, much lnger than 400-500 cycles. There are different types of li-ion batteries.
And reaching that given cycle number does NOT mean the battery dies. You can use it quite for some time afterwards. That number just means after this you hace on x% capacity left. So e.g. after 500 cycles (for the worst type of li-ion) you have around 80% capacity. That still brings you through the day.
Charging to 100% here and there is not a big deal. But never, ever, under no circumstances, let the battery drop to 0%. It can kill the battery instantly by losing most or all of the capacity.

As a consumer that's exactly what I want. I don't want my expensive stuff repaired but rather replaced.
But it is important to build this thing to las as long as possible anyway. So if this thing runs for, let's say 4 years, I will have a new one anyway up to that time.
A smartwatch was never intend to live as long as a regular watch. It's a computer and prone to be outdated in several years just like a smartphone. Especially when having WearOS on it.

eeeeeeeeeee-waste. looks really neat in the video but the price for the features doesn't make any sense and it's not even a standalone device with any specific use, not even close. no oxygen or health sensor other than heartrate which is likely inaccurate as the previous ones ? ? i dunno man. Google Nexus was a good phone back in the day lol . . . the pixel 7 seemed good. Do companies on this level of wealth and research really need to milk this ratio of many bad products to few useful ones? It's all a game these days.

DukeNukem, 21 Aug 2024The problem with this is we know all lithium ion batteries ... moreIt is little bit different. The battery cycles are full cycles. It means youl would literally have to recharge the battery from 0 to 100 every single time. But charging it from 25 to 95 % uses around 60-70% of one cycle. So there are more real life charging cycles left. It's almost always at least 24 months of use before the battery drops charging capacity significantly. Even after that it should be able to work at 70-80% of the capacity but with quicker battery drain. It's really important to not charge to 100%, but leave it at 90-95%. Saves a lot of the cycles and helps the overall battery life.

I have never seen anyone repair anything anyway...

Insane. This was the reason I sold my Gen 1 Pixel Watch without opening the box. It was a gratis gift for pre-ordering the Pixel 7 Pro. I thought they would surely redesign the pixel accessories to be repairable, at the very least for a tech to be able to replace a faded battery.

The problem with this is we know all lithium ion batteries start to degrade after 400-500 cycles. So this watch needs a daily recharge. After 18 months the battery requires replacement.

Androidy, 21 Aug 2024To begin with, Google got nothing to do with hardware manuf... moreThat is rather nonsense, on a 3rd Gen product. Google has the literal money and resource to make a repairable smartwatch, and Android Wear is 10 years old. They shouldn’t need to copy Apple with their nonsense (had a series 9 die after 6 months, didn’t have Apple Care, unrepairable product a decade later.)

To begin with, Google got nothing to do with hardware manufacturering business whatsoever.

450 dollars for a few hours of charging* and having to charge it 2 or 3 times a day hahahaha you better buy a gold watch

This also holds true for the Apple Watch. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 however is quite repairable. It has 4 big screws on the back.

Has anyone actually repaired a smart watch?

Basically, skip the smartwatch and use smart band many times over. I've a Huwaei Band 6 working solid since it's launch at nominal cost. I know it doesn't compete with a smartwatch but I don't understand buying e waste at the price of a good midrange phone which can't be repaired. Same instance with Apple Watch back in 2019 and no further purchases done ever. Even under warranty, you get a refurbished unit so makes no sense to pay for the new one, suffer accidental damage and get a replacement refurb
