Google does have a history of shifting gears, but I think there's a chance things might be different this time around with Wear OS, given the deeper integration with partners like Samsung. It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold whether Google sticks to it or if Samsung really does take things in their own direction again

I agree that smartwatches aren't built to last forever, especially with non-replaceable batteries. But I still hope we see better long-term software support to at least extend their usability a bit more. Hopefully, with the growing competition, brands will start prioritizing that.

Whilst its a poor decision it's hardly surprising when the original Watch and Watch 2 both also have similar support
Although you do have to wonder why Google couldn't give a further year or two's security updates, as anybody still using Google Wallet etc on the watch after 3 years is left open to any security breaches.

I've got a huawei watch gt3 and I'm super happy with it I've got all the health metrics I need and a two week battery life previously had a samsung galaxy watch 4 classic that would last a day and a half which was appalling and I don't need messaging apps on my watch I have my phone for that.

Incase you didn't know. There is a G-Shock watch model that can connect to your phone using Bluetooth to synchronize your workout, time management, notifications and setting without fiddle the watch. And the best part is, the battery is regular watch battery that you can buy yourself at the store. Plus you can get the tough solar model and the battery still can be replaceable. The price might be a bit expensive for where you come, but it's on par or slightly cheaper than the Apple watch Ultra depends on the model you're interested in. My G-Shock Mudman been with me for 3 years plus already and haven't changed the battery yet.

After years of wearing a smartwatch I don't think I want one anymore. I think I'd rather buy a proper watch that will last, a G-shock or a mechanical automatic watch like a Seiko. These quite expensive smartwatches have a very short lifespan given the ever increasing price.

Still use it on my Watch 3 Titanium with more than 2 days of battery usage... Launched with 3 days of battery for my usage.
Watch 6 or 7 ? Not even 2 full days FROM the start.
So what give? A day battery in a year or two?
No no, nope Google, keep breaking product and continuity because that what you are doing the best 😂

It will be the same with WearOS. Thus only 3 years of support. Google knows they are not in it for the long term.
I'm guessing Samsung will simply pick up the slack again and spin it off into their own OS.
