Can we get a third OS for people disillusioned with Apple and Google for the same ridiculous UX trends?
…round corners, icons being stripped of their visual uniqueness, overuse of tiles, swipe left on home for your curated summary of bullcrap interlaced with ads, inefficient quick settings dropdown, blurred translucency, unnecessary animations, the same dock and status icon bar that have been in use three decades---at least since the Palm PDA. This is supposed to be modern? (If that's modern, why aren't these ever element found in vintage futuristic sci-fi?)
It's the handheld equivalent of nearly every modern web page; either Bootstrap or Tailwind, lots of whitespace/padding, same hamburger menu on mobile or logo-left-nav-right top bar on desktop, lots of flexbox on the main page (especially three tiles side-by-side), rounded corners, neumorphism, a background video or carousel if you really want to "capture" your visitor's "attention" (aka "annoy them").
Sure, these companies hire talented designers, but who decides what a great designer is? The first candidate who has Don Norman on their shelf and fervently agrees with the new Figma layout changes? The non-designer in charge of hiring? All the other senior designers who overwhelmingly use iPhone regardless of their actual employer?

New quick toggle looks like it is copied from Samsung's OneUI quick toggle.

Again Apple's iOS 18 doesn't offer any Productivity features. Neither Split-screen (where 2 apps are shown in parallel on the iPhone screen - incl. drag & drop) nor Desktop mode features. Still the orientation of the home screens and menues cannot change from portrait mode into landscape mode (and vice-versa). The ability to fire up a connected 16:9 monitor with a decent casting of content (without that pillar-boxed / letter-boxed crap) ist still absent. Who cares about Apple Intelligence, when Apple is too stupid to cater for basic Productivity features?? Rest of the features are nonense or maximum "nice to have". So basically iOS 18 is again a big fail!

"Photos has gotten a redesign, which Apple dubs its biggest ever."
Have they fixed the undeletable pics and sort order of pics properly like on android side yet?

Now that Apple has USB-C and more customization, there isn't much to differentiate between the two. Yes you can sideload apps on Android but the average user won't care about that. Apple has tighter security and end-to-end encryption.

You guys are free to disagree with me, but I think iOS 18 is more polished now than Android (Pixel).
Yes, it's a joke that it took them this long to add these basic features. But at the same time, I think they did it quite well. These sorts of customization stuff used to only be available as jailbreak tweaks. There is little difference between iOS and Android now in terms of customization. Of course Android still offers custom icons and launchers. But the feature gap has shrunk by a lot. I mainly just admire the UX and how everything feels coherent.

Anonymous, 29 Sep 2024Nothing special about apple in general.Apple sucks they won't even allow the user to unlock the bootloader and root their device! This is not okay! IOS sucks it's locked down like a jail that needs to be jailbroken. People want to install custom ROM nowadays. It's not the 20th century anymore. Come on. On PC we got administrator account too. Why I cannot have root account on my phone by default? This is a question to both Apple and Android.
