Cheap phones have a chin because all the tech is inside that chin, making bezels thinner means moving everything to a different spot, meaning you need to partly fold the tech, use smaller and more expensive parts, but also keep the thickness in check while having enough space for stuff like speaker, usb port and battery.
Sometimes they need to slim down that stuff too because of smaller bezels and the extra space the hardware from the screen needs, above that cooling and temperatures can get affected by all of this, and they need to take that into account too.
People think it is "simply moving stuff" but you need to downsize and move a ton of things on the bottom to make it happen, and all those things add to the cost.

Samsung would have two choices here, make the prices higher and slim down the bottom bezel (costs more money, because you need to cram everything elsewhere) or make symmetrical bezels in same size the bottom one already is.
Nobody wants the latter
Third option would be to go oldschool like Sony and make side bezels thin, top and bottom symmetrical but a bit thicker and remove the notch/punch hole.

instead of giving 6 years of update a better hardware with 3 years of update would be better.

I would think that then you could get more symmetrical bezels, although larger at all sides then. It would make for large bezels but at least it would be more equal on all sides and not trigger the OCD people (like me). Some have smaller chins which is a bit more in balance while some have very large chins. I know it all comes down to cost but I can't imagine it would make that much of a difference.

A lot of people don't know it but oleds are folded for smaller bezels, that of course isn't a frwe thing.

why does every new Samsung phone has to be a 6.7 inch brick? can't they make at least one model aside from the vanilla S a bit smaller?

There are a fair amount of people who even if they can't afford more expensive models, they'll still save up for one, instead of going for the Chin9000
They look like that so more people are repelled by them
And the notches are like that for the same reason

This phone is a joke: samsung galaxy m51 from 4 years ago is not only smaller than this, it also has a bigger, 7000mah battery, a headphone jack, and a dedicated sd card slot. I don't know what you call making a bigger phone with less features, but I call it going backwards.

While I have nothing against basic devices and I'm very happy to see Oled screens coming to that segment I'm still puzzled why all the basic devices must have these ugly chins at the bottom of them. I don't think there is any valid reason why they do this. At least there are more and more U shaped front camera housings instead of the ugly V shaped ones. About that, in 2024, is the difference between a punch-hole display and a notched one that big? I this the reason to still use notches? Or is it to clearly show to everyone that you are on a budget when it comes to smartphones?
