Fabiana, 31 Oct 2024Turns out Windows is the main factor in PC obsolescence. Wi... moreTbf its not Windows itself that runs slower or less efficient, its the baked in security that is constantly scanning the pc for threats that is hogging resources that wasn't present on older generation of Windows. If you run custom Windows iso's like spectre ghost or tiny11 that offer Windows without Microsoft Defender they absolutely outperform anything from back in the day on older hardware.

Windows XP ran like a rocket on 256MB RAM back when it was released. Windows 8 was awesome with 4GB RAM, also at release. Now Windows 11, with stacked updates, runs sort of OK with 8GB RAM and SSD for basic tasks...
No wonder some say it's currently just a modern skin to hide Windows 95 era cpl files for control panel.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2024I don't know why you think that a new Windows PC will ... moreYes I have had a powerful Windows PC before, a Surface Laptop 3. I actually liked Windows better than Mac at the time because before I bought that laptop, I had to use the family computer, which was a mid 2009 MacBook Pro that only got updates to El Capitan. And the surface laptop was good at first, especially coming from a MacBook that couldn’t really do more than web browsing, but after Windows 11, it started to become way buggier and laggier. And once I switched to an M1 Mac mini, I really couldn’t go back to Windows.

Apple was 2 years ahead in smartphones cpu's when they dropped the iPhone 5s.. and are still ahead. This switch to desktop ARM makes me feel like they will be a decade ahead if the trend towards ARM's keeps happening, hopefully the nvidia will step back into the mobile gpu game to spice things up.

Funny that they kept the headphone jack on the Mac Mini at that super smol size!
No (Reversible) USB-A is a letdown btw, lest we use USB-C to USB-C cable for today's peripherals...

The new Mac mini models are less than half the size of the previous Mac mini design. The previous Mac mini design was introduced by then-Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Jobs, making them closer to the dimensions of an Apple TV set-top box. Beyond the new chassis, which is 2 inches tall, the computers will run M4 and M4 Pro processors, part of a wave of Mac upgrades that feature that chip generation, as per the report.

I do not really like small form factor. Intel NUC for example.
Sure they save space.. but trade off is fan noise. (Ether overheat / or smaller fan that need to spin faster to remove same amount of heat thus generate more noise)
The base model most likely would run cool and silent for a great HTPC solution.
Will need to see review before considering. Especially the Pro versions.

The pricing structure again makes no sense.
The best model to buy is the $600 Base M4 model. This is cheaper than the lackluster Intel NUC or the modest AMD Mini PCs, those might require separate purchases of the OS, RAM, Storage, and not sure how they match up in performance.
The second best model to buy is the $1500 M4 Pro, with the upgrade to the Ethernet and Thunderbolt 5 ports. It is double the price but you're getting double the ram, storage, and performance, roughly speaking. Overall, I'm not recommending this second option, I think it depends on the needs of the buyer. But the other options don't make sense. You wouldn't get the base M4 and more RAM, because that implies your workload requires the extra performance which you should be targeting the M4 Pro. Or getting more storage could be legitimate, but with the markup prices, you would be better off getting a Thunderbolt 4/5 external storage. Or even just a regular USB-C flash-based storage.
Overall, I think the two options I mentioned are good. And this is a good release, well done Apple. In fact, it is so good that it made the new iMac obsolete. As you can get a cheaper display or a much better monitor and pair it with the Mac Mini, for a better experience that is cheaper. Just bypass the iDiot Tax from Apple.
