LG KS500 to pack 3 megapixels, GPS and an optical touchpad

31 Oct, 2008
The latest LG KS500 is one of those handsets that won't get your attention on first look but it packs quite a punch under its unassuming looks. The nifty slider boasts a 3 megapixel camera, a QVGA display, a GPS...

Erick, 31 Oct 2008Interesting that LG are not making this one a smartphone. I... moreI totally agree with u bro! I've seen a lot of Java LGs (and Samsung) without an "OS" yet having a document viewer, touchscreen, large pixel camera and and a QWERTY keyboard. Features that are a luxury on the MAJESTIC brand are just the bread and butter of LG and Samsung. And the annonymous guy making fun of my being African, you are just like the Nazist guys who were plotting (or should I say dreaming?) to kill Barack Obama because they do'nt want a black president and they do'nt know that they're only making him more of a favourite than the short-armed MacCain guy. FYI we had 3G here in South Africa long before you Americans back in 2004 and our 3G coverage extends to the coutryside through to the nature(game) reserves. You are one of these foolish Americans who think we live with lions and monkeys. This is a first world country my friend, we have all the smartphones here, even your overhyped iCrap from your crazy money-rippers Apple is sold here by Vodacom, the best carrier in the world coz it brought a lot of good services to the masses, coutrywide coverage, 3G, prepaid (Vodacom was the first in the world to offer prepaid so that even an old woman who can't speak a word of English can be connected too) and now we have a stake for Vodacom shares through the BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) program. Oh by the way I'm writting this post using Operamini 4.1 on with my mid-end Nokia 6234 I bought (for R1800 or $170 cash on prepaid) 2 years ago which I use as a modem to connect to my Windows XP SP3 pc on which I also use Opera (Internet Explorer is so slow) that syncs with my Operamini flawlessly. I think you're well orientated about my Rainbow 'Mzansi' Africa, with the finest weather in the world. Well keep posting guys!

Interesting that LG are not making this one a smartphone. I believe this is a very clever move given the failed attempt by SE and Motorola to push a smartphone success with unfortunate limited success (UIQ). This means LG is perhaps wanting to explore ways of making Java an OS through which smartphone functionality can be applied. Furthermore, the definition of what constitutes a smartphone must surely be the subject of debate. Feature phones of today have featues on-board that yesterday's ssmartphones could only dream of. I guess the defining difference remains the ability of 3rd party developers to become involved in smartphone software. However with Java applets such as Opera Mini, even this definition highlights how probably within 2-3 years most phones will be smart in one way or another.

Its not the MP which determine the quality of the photo, very much has to do with optics and lenses. dont get fooled by the manifacturers claim that 8 MP will get you great quality photos.

If 5MP was a camera for every phone then phones would be luxarious to own. So what about low income consumers like me who get ZAR5000(9South African Rand=$1) or less a month? And phones are expensive here because of the shippings and charges added by network carriers. LG has made a handful of good phones but people just don't want to aprove that company.
