iPhone 17 Air to be even thinner than previously rumored

It's just mind-bending.

Anonymous, 26 Nov 2024Interestingly, that's how quite a few Apple owners are... moreI have owned an Apple device, the last iPhone device that was masterminded by Steve Jobs, and the last that brought groundbreaking innovation, the iPhone 5s.
It really was an amazing phone, right before that ridiculously awful iPhone 6 that started an era of mediocre devices.
The only device that really stood out since then was the iPhone 6 Plus, which probably was also cooked by Steve Jobs.
It wasn't innovative per se, it was just way better than anything else at the time.
I didn't like huge phones, but that thing was amazing because it felt like a tablet with phone capabilities at the time

The bendgat... moreThe reason current gen iPad Pro doesn't bend, it's because they added reinforcement rod within a frame. All the previous gen iPad Pros were bending. Space grade materials won't solve the problem of having long thin frame made from the substance, whose natural property is to deform under the stress (plasticity).

I really don't want my next phone to look like a facsimile of a certain Cupertino product just because a change was needed. The smartphone market is still suffering from the effects of Apple's decisions from way back then, from losing items in the packaging to design decisions that are just plain stupid, then here comes another problem with the thinness. Ooh la la

There’s only so many things that can be done to an iPhone, to change it.

And the efforts for a new device category have failed so far (Apple Watch has worked as a compliment to the iPhone, and the VR Headset has completely stagnated).

They need to come up to physical design changes. The last time they went to “thicker” for more battery life, and all the indusstry followed.

Now they will go back to thinness at all costs, and for sure the industry will follow.

They are not betting to fit the need of people with this. They are betting people will follow their lead and want to buy it because it’s the newest and most obvious design change in a while.

Well I have bad news for you. Your cheeks won't choose whether you have a Samsung, Xiaomi, or an iPhone in your back pocket, and it will not be so kind to your fragile iPhone 17 Air if you suddenly found yourself the urge to sit down. Case in point: Apple is proving nothing because it's already been done before, and those buying one will be a t(f)ool for being the guinea pigs of this experiment

It isn't far fetched to think that sitting on a 5.5mm thick phone could bend, regardless of what space-age military grade magic aluminum Apple (or Samsung) is going to use. everyone said all the same things about the Samsung S25 Slim announcement. This isn't an Apple vs Samsung argument, this asking who wants a more fragile phone with worse specs, from either manufacturer.
Oh, and try not to take it so personal that almost 10 years ago, yes, the Iphone 6 bent in your pocket. It happened, and it seems a little R&D would have prevented it. Apple should be embarrassed. You? Not so much.

I know this sounds ridiculous but trust me when apple announced iphone 17 air suddenly all Chinese competitors will announced their air version too ( oppo Reno air, Xiaomi civi air, realme gt air ,etc). 🐒 See what 🐒 do.

I don't understand the point of trying to go thinner. Are people wanting a thinner device?

Maybe since a lot of people use very protective cases that make the phone really thick, so perhaps this is for them. IDK

The bendgate iPhone 6 thing was because of the cheap 6000 series aluminum they used, they moved to 7000 series for every iPhone and iPad after that and never have had an issue because 7000 series aluminum is harder than most steels. If you had read the article the iPad pro is already thinner than this rumored 17 Air will be and nobody is having bending issues with those.
