2024 Winners and losers: Apple

Apple should make EU forced changes to iOS available to all jurisdictions. Not every nation dares to risk the ire of the US by suing and fining Apple. EU dares because they are a trading bloc made up of many smaller European nations even though they're weaker now because of Brexit. Thankfully, they're not weakened to the state that it would be impossible to confront the US.

My take
iPhone 16: winner. 8GB RAM, camera control
iPhone 16 Pro: loser. $1000 with only 8GB RAM. Better wait next year for the 17 Pro with 12GB of RAM.
M4 Mac’s: winner, 16GB RAM as standard is good
Vision Pro: I would say winner in the making. And it’s not about the actual hardware. It’s about the UI/UX that will bring new paradigm on future computing devices.
iPads: barely a winner. They’re still the best tablet experience in the planet, but clearly the hardware and price are leaping over the software
AirPods 4: loser. I’d rather them selling the AirPods Pro 2 for less than trying to upsell the regular AirPods form factor.
Apple intelligence: loser for now, but has great potential. Due to Apple focusing more on in device AI, many of the performance and user experience are smoother than what Android offers. But they’re still at infancy.

Anonymous, 11 hours agoApple = no root = no custom ROM = no fun = no buy = looser phoneSorry, but compared to a decade ago, the custom rom community has died, and a lot.
Unless you own a Pixel, or a Sony device, it's pretty much old flagships or weird devices the ones that get proper custom rom support. And I say that as an Android user that loved to flash roms every month on my S3 mini.
Nowadays, no one cares that much, and that goes for root, too.

Unlike iOS, Android bloatware can also include 3rd party apps like Facebook as well as carrier installed apps. Also you can delete almost all preinstalled iOS apps now.
> a slow processor
It’s not as big of a problem as it used to be, but a lot of budget Android phones can barely run the OS, and some midrangers can’t handle more than a year of updates.
> ads baked
Even the Xiaomi 14 Ultra had ads, and that’s a flagship phone. There’s probably workarounds to reduce the amount of ads, but most people won’t know how or don’t feel comfortable messing around with their phone

In fact there are many chinese flagship that give shorter software support than a 400USD iphone SE.
Good news is, only minuscule people buy chinese flagship.
Android should be only for Samsung and Pixel. Less e-waste, good for humanity.

403 Forbidden, 18 hours agoNot our fault if you can't afford a good phone. 🤷♀️
... moreI can understand if you are very dissapointed by the poor sales of chinese brand.
But believing chinese brand as a RollsRoyce is just one sign of a mental breakdown, because there is no chinese brand that sold more number of premium chinese flagship more than Apple or Samsung.
In car brand comparison, Toyota sold more cars compared to chinese brand Wuling (low cost car brand), because many people believe Toyota is better than Wuling.
This is simple hurtful truth for some people.

DomtheCuber, 14 hours agoI have a 90hz Galaxy A14 5G that I use whenever I wanna mes... moreA few things I noticed:
- 60Hz feels sloppy on many phones with higher refresh rates, because many animations and performance regulating libraries and such are designed for the higher refresh rate
- Personally I didn't feel much difference with 90Hz either, and thought it was overhyped, but 120Hz actually feels pretty nice
So yeah, it's not like 60Hz iPhones are unusable or anything, but I might be angry as an Apple user, being locked out of a better experience for no real reason. And let's be honest, it won't be much more expensive, and won't drain much more battery, those are placebo-level effects nowadays.

DomtheCuber, 14 hours agoI have a 90hz Galaxy A14 5G that I use whenever I wanna mes... moreWell there's your problem
Not only do you have a 60 hz iPhone as your main phone but the A14 is a budget phone which probably lags just by browsing gsmarena
And the difference is indeed more drastic, 60 and 120 hz, that's double the refresh rate
Go to a store and try out any flagship or even a midranger with 120 hz, see for yourself
Also, i don't have or care about a Nintendo Switch at all. My phone is 120 hz while my pc monitor is 144. The last time i used a 60 hz screen was in 2022 when i was still using a Samsung S8 and then upgraded to an S22 Ultra. Can never go back to 60 hz again

I've used 120hz and 60hz and side by side, I can see the difference. In real work usage I haven't. People here are acting like PC Master Race turning up their noses at lower frame rates Lmao.

Anonymous, 23 hours agoUsing a chinese phone feels like using a fake iPhone knock ... moreSaying that androids feel slower than IOS is the most braindead thing ever when a base Iphone that already costs more than 90% of the android phones doesn't even have a telephoto camera or a high refresh rate display and every single animation takes up time which is the most annoying thing about the entire IOS software experience and the cherry on top being that it doesn't even have a dedicated back button or gesture. So no Iphone just doesn't "always work" when you can't even choose to do things the way you want to and have to adhere to a way of navigating the software by following steps decided by the company. Hence the people who say "oh it just works" are dumb and need to follow instructions to work and are controlled like puppets by their Apple overlords.

This is also a thing on iOS? Haven't been using iOS since a long time, but iirc Apple TV, Apple Music, Wallet, etc. are literally preinstalled when you just got a new iPhone.
> a slow processor
This hasn't been a problem in Android since *checks calendar* 2019 lol.
> ads baked
Except if you're using that one low-end Xiaomi, BBK, or Transsion phones, I don't remember when last time I found ads on my phone, especially the one that priced the same as the iPhone.

Narazumono, 14 hours agoOnly someone who's only used a 60 hz phone would say that I have a 90hz Galaxy A14 5G that I use whenever I wanna mess around with Android, and I can still use my 60hz iPhone no problem. Maybe the difference between 60hz and 120hz is more drastic, or maybe I’d notice if I used the Samsung as my main phone, but for me I can just switch between high and normal refresh rate screens no problem.
Also how do people who call 60hz unusable even function in a world where most screen aren’t high refresh rate? Like do you see a Nintendo Switch and think it’s unplayable because the screen doesn’t refresh fast enough?
