Tecno, especially with their folds looks like a pretty nice option for the price. Too bad not available / fully compatible in NA. Things I want in a phone
1. smaller form factor
2. a camera that isn't trash
3. decent battery
Probably won't get #1 but there's folds now. I barely care about screen refresh, software updates and optimization, gaming, materials etc etc. I expect that's the majority of people - if you can call and text, use apps, take good pictures and have the phone last all day without charging, that's a winner. I think Tecno is doing this at a nice price...

Darth Caesium, 05 Jan 2025Tbh, they should, in the sense that they should want softwa... morenoo my point was that people should just focus on hardware since that's gonna be the MAIN differentiator. Software in budget phones is quite bad lol. Every phone has a more nuked software compared to the flagship ones. My main point is that they should just get rid of the skins for the budget phones and keep it only for midrangers/upper midrangers and higher tier devices, segregate things by features even more and by having a lightweight skinless budget phone you can actually make it feel smoother/bring out updates without much issues.
And ofc, it's all a software thing, stock android has shown time and time again how skins aren't usually optimized so it makes sense. But i think your point is also a bit weird considering how the s6 was 60 hz and like most of samsung's phones are 90hz+ now so the phones are better optimized for that also idk what the latest update was but skins slowly but surely caught up with lightweight/skinless androids. 2-4-ish years ago i started feeling like that and now every skin is supremely mature and if you're on a flagship you can't go wrong, apart from update cycles ofc which some manufacturers are better at. I think the pixel ui working better could also have been due to a different reason, Pixels are made on Tensor chips and are basically like exynos phones and since the s6 was an exynos phone it meshed better? idk for sure tho lol im just making theories here but hopefully you get my point.
Anyways, it's obvious for anyone who's used a phone for more than 3 years that manufacturers either like to nuke phones with updates or the updates are so big/heavy that the phone can't handle it and thus the user feels the NEED to update.

jiyen235, 05 Jan 2025when someone's buying a budget phone, they DON'T ... moreTbh, they should, in the sense that they should want software that's as slim and smooth as possible. It's entirely possible to optimise the latest Android on a Helio G99/G100 (and probably even on a Helio G85) if the software experience is not bloated and doesn't go for eye candy. Those phones would also have to come with enough RAM of course, but most of them do. If we're speaking truly ultra-budget, though, then of course no one cares about software experience there.
Of course, software experiences like HiOS, OneUI, HyperOS and more don't tend to be optimised well for smoothness even on higher-end hardware, so it's not that surprising that they're not that great on lower-end hardware either. All of them have definitely improved on this front, but if the Pixel Experience UI can be ported on to custom ROMs for old phones like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and perform better than new phones with better theoretical performance, then there's definitely something wrong.

I bought Tecno camon 30 pro shortly after my Poco x3 pro died. I chose Tecno for its bypass chraging, turns out it is not too useful except games. The Tecno did not feel an upgrade except the camera held back severely with its weak camera app vs Gcam. The memory and storage is generous but not too important. Realized the display feels smaller vs the X3 Pro after months, because the phone has a taller aspect ratio, increasing the screen diagonal spec without making the display bigger than average phone. The display has max brightness of an LCD display-not sure if it is boosting brightness outdoors.
The OS has plenty bugs and poor quality vs Xiaomi or Samsung OS. I can't to replace upgrade with a Redmi in the future.

Winner: Transsion pushing the limits at the lower end, giving Xiaomi a run for its money.
Loser: software quality.
Ugly: too many G99/G100 phones! 😅

Tecno is a good brand but poor in terms of security in line of fake phones mushrooming around e.g tecno stopped making of spark 20 pro giving a space for fake phones

PureOS, 04 Jan 2025I would always like to see stock android, with little tweak... morewell, if a manufacturer IS going to give updates, they're going to give you newer android updates as well and since the manufacturer is focused on updates already, the chances of the updates being of good quality are higher.

Never heard in Eur... moreTranssion Holdings group (Tecno - Infinix - Itel) went from the 11th to 4th rank worldwide just after Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi....Not bad for "crap" brands mainly sold in South Asia, Middle East, Africa and few eastern European countries with Turkey and Greece.
Tecno is even number 1 in Africa followed by Samsung.
Your homeland smartphone market trend is very far to represent the world, try to learn a bit before posting nonsense.

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2025Biggest Sore Loser: Colorwashing Campaign.Honestly I don’t see the problem with it. It does feel kinda performative for what should really be the bare minimum, like “we’re getting rid of bias that really shouldn’t have been there in the first place”, but it’s overall a net positive. And it’s much better than those stupid auto-beautification filters found on many cheap phones that lighten and smooth your skin

Lack of clarity on software update is a major reason why I avoid Tecno, Infinix and iTel phones which are very popular in Nigeria. This should be a loser for Tecno.
