Akarius, 23 Jan 2025I stay within the Netflix realm because that is the subject... moreYour original comment said nothing about Netflix, therefore it was open to interpretation.
Also, while I do support getting physical media over digital, it doesn't change the fact that one can lose access to digital media they purchased.
If you don't purchase digital media, then cool. Good for you. It still doesn't justify companies removing access for people who did purchase it fair and square. Still, it still changes nothing about my point.
And your Porsche comparison is awful. It implies one steals because they can't afford something, which is an irrelevant point to the discussion at hand. You can't download a Porsche so it can't be taken away by the manufacturer randomly one day. But hey, since Netflix is the topic of the article and you claim to be on topic of it, why even bring up a pointless and irrelevant argument such as the Porsche one? I don't understand the logic you used to come to that point.

"By all means, if you enjoy being screwed over by money hungry corporations, then good for you. But I don't. If I purchase something (not pay a subscription fee) then it should be mine. And if it isn't, then I've been robbed.
All of this comes back to my original point; if buying isn't owning, then pirating isn't stealing."
I don't buy what I can't own so I agree with you. And I also don't pirate movies or games. I either buy what I want, or don't go around stealing what I can't buy. I can't afford Porsche, you don't see me justifying stealing one because it's a greedy company that dares asking for it more than I can afford.
Also, counterargument: you can buy movies on DVD and no one will ever take it from you (unless burglary occurs). You own them forever. Show us your collection of DVDs, put your money where your mouth is. That's right, didn't think so.

With Netflix, you're n... moreI like how you only mention Netflix (a subscription service) but completely ignore companies that allow you to purchase movies, such as Sony, Google, Ultraviolet, etc. I guess you had to use a straw man argument in order to make your point.
What happens to those movies that you purchased from those companies if they go out of business? What if they decide to get rid of the movie/s you purchased and want to bring in other ones? I'll tell you what happens. You lose access to them. You can no longer access that which you paid for. But it's ok because "corporations need to make money", right? So who cares what the consumer thinks, amirite?

Crackling Doom, 23 Jan 2025Do you realize companies can take away digital purchases fr... moreGreat argument, except aimless. With Netflix, you're not buying a show/movie. You're paying for access to the library of TV shows and movies. You stop paying, you're losing access to the library. Still doesn't excuse pirating. Still doesn't stop the guy I responded to from being a hypocrite, wanting to get everything for free with one hand, and calling others "greedy" with the other. Still changes nothing because it doesn't matter if a digital good can reproduced and copied endlessly without actually causing a loss to whoever owns the digital content, because in case of pirating we're not talking about stealing per se, it's rather a concept of losing potential profit, which is even harder to prove in the court. Money is not my main point here.
Morality of this action is what I question here and there's a good reason why focus of these discussions always shifts to money. Because it's morally indefensible, there's no doubt about it, so the only thing left for those participating is to twist the technicalities, and with enough twisting, you can white wash it enough to arrive at conclusions just like your own. All in an effort to just push away the morality of their actions deep enough to subconsciousness and bury it under myriad of hair splitting to not admit that you're the evil doer here.
It's been like this since the dawn of humanity - the lengths to which a human mind goes in order to justify wrongdoing is astonishing. Pirating digital content is not the highest caliber. Read enough criminal books or articles and you'll see under a magnifying glass how far we're capable of going to push away the moral aspect of one's decisions.
And yet it still changes nothing in the legal and moral aspect of it. Funny how that works.

I realised that any Netflix show that they stream is the same that I can see on pirate websites or apps, but for free. So what's the point to pay everymonth to see something that I can get for free? And the quality is the same. Their greed will explode someday and they will loose customers same way they won them
