Apple releases iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 adoption numbers for the first time

25 January 2025
They are very similar to what we've seen for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 last year.

potato4k, 25 Jan 2025This used to be a big deal. But nowadays, it's rather ... moreThat's a great point actually. My OnePlus 7 pro is still running great on Android 11. It can get Android 12 but I downgraded as it negatively impacted 4G reception. I still get updated apps and even the theft protection feature through the Google app a month ago. The system is stable and battery is OK after replacement. So far, it's the longest I've ever kept a phone. 5 years and counting. Makes constantly question why would I drop $1000+ on a new phone if all my needs are already being met. Android is awesome.

I'm an Android user and I think, there's nothing to cry about this news, as the author expects.

See, what the world does is not my business. I'm using an older Android version myself.
I do not upgade Android for the fear of device slowing down, or more privacy invasive features shoved down our throat by Google. For example, compared to Android 4.4, Android 10 is more of a privacy enemy (data going to Google).
In the end, neither Google nor Apple are my friends, on the contrary, they all want our data. We're all fodder for them.

Why should I laugh or cry? None of them are my team. I shouldn't even be concerned.

I'm an Android fan who is thankful for Apple setting the bar high. Samsung, Google and other Android OEMs only got better at supporting their phones because they have strong competition. No need to cry 🤷‍♂️

I would rather not update, got an ipad on ios 14 and another on ios 18. Any difference? None, one needed an 8gb download for no reason and the one on ios 14 is working just fine. whats the point? Its like going from Android 13 to 14, why? so they can remove more options? Thats the only thing I noticed, features that get removed..

This used to be a big deal. But nowadays, it's rather meaningless.

For iPhones, it's great when Apple still supports your phone. But once your phone is dropped from the latest iOS, you're on your own as you can no longer run the latest stock apps like Safari. Ie you no longer have a secure and up to date browser, thanks to Apple locking all stock apps updates to the monolithic OS update.

In contrast with Android, even if your phone only runs Android 12, you can still run the latest browser and webview, up to date. You also have the separate security patches, and even if that's no longer given, you are still up to date with Google Play Services updates. And you can still get new features as well (ie Goole pushing the Quick share feature to Android phones as old as Android 6 devices).

So if I had to pick a phone that is no longer supported, I'd rather have Android than an iPhone.

Most of the scores of people not using iOS 18 is mostly due to the iPad’s “incapability” and not their choice.
