Now it even looks like a camera, which it actually is. The phone is just an accessory. It will probably get all the accolades and awards for camera phone of the year, but unless they finally hire some people in the design department, the overall impression will still be: incredibly ugly.

Every year they manage to make phones look uglier! I also preferred the old 'MI' logo, the lower case 'xiaomi' looks horrible.

The camera is one part of a phone, Xiaomi lacks optimisation, quality control, quick updates and a fast and responsive UI.
Hard pass for me.

Another boring and ugly phone with generic big circle crater.
Chinese brand never learn from the flop sales of its flagship.

Anonymous, 8 hours agoThis actually looks kind of nice but it's too early to... moreyour find x7 ultra should last you 3 more years at least based on its camera hardware. The only reason you'd need to switch is if battery life isn't good enough. I think we're quite a ways away from seeing APS-C sensors or dual 1/1.56" telephotos alongside a 1/2" or larger UW cam.

Mewing Sigma, 8 hours agoIf they had done like Vivo, they wouldn't need to use ... moreLarger sensors are now a thing of the past, especially if you want extreme zoom. Stacked sensors and AI processing are making them redundant, and phone manufacturers know that the typical consumer wants "good enough", not "the absolute best".
Typical use cases see 99% of photos taken either stay on the phone (with a small screen) or are uploaded to social media (and automatically down sampled). Consumers aren't using their devices to win Pulitzer photography prizes 😂
Then the laws of physics apply. Larger zoom requires a larger sensor, so if you want an extreme zoom, the smartphone manufacturer has to use a SMALLER sensor otherwise the device would be 2cm+ thick. There is only so much physical space on a pocketable device and for competition reasons, they all aim to keep the device 9mm or slimmer.
The manufacturer has to choose a smaller sensor, but with a higher MP range, software can crop the image 4x to 50MP and provide a slightly more detailed (processed) shot. That also negates needing a larger sensor.
If the very best image quality is important to you, don't bother with smartphones.
Go and buy a dedicated mirrorless camera. Smartphones will ALWAYS have limitations with photography and if they didn't, they'd cost $5k upwards and be enormous bricks to fit in all the big sensors and subsequent optics, which you likely would never buy anyway, like almost every consumer. Hence, the compromises.

If they had done like Vivo, they wouldn't need to use the small JN5 for ultrawide. In my opinion, using such a small sensor doesn't make sense at all, considering the fact that this is a camera-focused beast.
Something like:
IMX888-13MM-26MM
LYT-900-35MM-70MM
ISOCELL HP9-85MM-255MM
This would have been better.
