T-Mobile Starlink service now open to everyone in the US, is free to use until July

10 February 2025
This includes AT&T and Verizon customers too, not just T-Mobile subscribers. Once it launches in July, it will be included for free with some plans and cost extra for others.

(The Japanese phones that only work in Japan are more interesting, but y'all aren't ready for that conversation.)

Personally for me, it's T-Mobile. Other services (AT&T, Verizon, etc.) are notorious among US imported Chinese phone users (except OnePlus since they're officially sold here) for not allowing their service to work on their phones.

Although keep in mind that iPhones have the majority market share in the US, androids are the minority here. Chinese phones that aren't OnePlus are not sold here, and don't even have the same cellular bands, making 5G on them impossible since they require N71.

I would've been all for Starlink if it weren't for the fact that you can easily mistake one for a star. It puts stargazers at a huge disadvantage, whether it be amateurs or academic researchers.

I'm usually not someone with strong values/moral codes (you can tell with my support for AI in other comments), but stuff like this makes me very unwilling to support regardless of how good it is.

It's good to see the less fortunate of the world get free internet access. No wait.

T-Dizzle, 10 Feb 2025Coverage and speed depends on where you are geographically. I'd say that T-Mobile is better in most urban areas, while Verizon is better in the rural East and AT&T is better in the rural West. So Starlink makes it possible for T-Mobile to have a modicum of service in the middle of nowhere without the massive infrastructure costs that AT&T and Verizon have already borne. It's disappointing that they're charging for it on most plans, and only currently supporting a small handful of phones when back in 2022 they seemed to suggest that virtually all phones would work out of the box.

On the flip side, even with the new administration, I'd expect the FCC to take strong action if T-Mobile is somehow blocking emergency 911 access to non-subscribers, since that is the one rule of telephony no one can get away with breaking. T-Mobile has constantly crowed that they're using normal frequencies (LTE Band 25 if I'm remembering correctly) so they have no excuses here.

I hope Elon Musk will bring this to my country. I'll definitely need it when I'm going back to my hometown up in the mountain range. Yes, my hometown is up the mountain range. Here in my country we have Starlink internet service. Now, I'm hoping for this.
