alcatraz, 15 Feb 2025That's top notch! Why don't they make phones like... moreIndeed!
It's because they're expensive to manufacture. For instance, the Nokia 8 was launched at $500, with most of the price coming from the bill of materials, totaling at $320 (a higher amount compared to modern flagships). SoCs weren't expensive until recent, and didn't suffer from an oversupply with tone-deaf price hikes like today's abomination of rebranded chipsets.
There's also the current HMD Skyline by Nokia itself, giving priority to end-user repairability. It's expected to have a better screen-on time with average use, if we take into account that adaptive battery takes about 2 weeks to a month to optimize battery life according to the user's usage. There's a vast difference between the battery life tests in the GSMArena review vs how it performs in real life, given that the team reviews phones for short term usage and sponsorship bias.

OneUI 5.1 definitely stands out as being efficient for me. I compared 2.0, 2.1, 3.1. I never checked 4. What surprises me is that battery consumption got better over time. Isn't it usually the opposite?

Not just that, but the device settings are important. Are you using your S20 on 1080p 60hz, 1440p 60hz, or 1080 120hz? What's your brightness level? Do you have always-on display turned on, or not?

I don't see this poor optimization, at least not on OneUI 5.1. I remember on previous versions including what was used in the gsmarena review, it was much worse. 5-6h screen on time. That's a huge difference considering it's the exact same device. I'm not comparing two of the same model, with differntly aged batteries etc.

dbizzle, 14 Feb 2025What the hell is the point of this phone lolIt's a test market for the new form factor, that if consumers are fine with it, I have a feeling it will replace the regular or plus Galaxy S.

That's exactly what Samsung is doing, almost every other brand has moved to at least 5500mAh batteries, or above 6000mAh ones.

I cannot see the point (read: innovation) in the race to produce the thinnest phones. As long as they have measurable thickness, it is not innovation. It would be innovative if a phone had 0 mm thickness.

So it will be huge, but thin, meaning extra fragile and not compact at all despite the lightweight body of it. Absolutely pointless.

I like that Samsung is betting on their battery optimizations (smaller battery). Many other manufacturers seem to have given up on that and just offer 5000mAh batteries with yet similar poor screen on time.
If only it were based on the vanilla or had a screen size between the plus and the vanilla, I'd be more excited. When you do endurance sports, last thing you want is a 220gr brick bouncing around in your pockets. 150gr is nice!!
