Weekly poll results: the Zenfone 12 Ultra suffers because Asus offers only 2 OS updates

16 February 2025
Many aren't happy with the price and design of the phone either, but the short software support window is really killing this Ultra's potential.

Mihail White, 16 Feb 2025What a disappointment, they will soon follow LG footsteps I doubt it. Like LG, Asus still makes laptops and PCs.

I can live with two OS update since most phones ends up struggling after three or four years anyway. It's the price that really bothers me.

rizki1, 16 Feb 2025if Asus gave 7 years of software updates people wouldn'... moreMarketing for larger phones is strong, while smaller phones receive less attention. Look at the Samsung S series—the "standard" S25 and S25+ received less spotlight, just like the regular iPhone and iPhone+, even though they are solid devices.

But no—some buyers only want the top models, and anything below that doesn’t interest them. However, if you look at the best-selling phones globally in 2024, you’ll find models like the Samsung A15 (4G and 5G), A05, Redmi 13C, and Samsung A35 alongside iPhones and Samsung S series devices.

In the coming years, the demand for luxury is expected to decline (economists say so, not me), and this trend is already happening. Some people will still buy high-end phones, and manufacturers will see the biggest profit margins from these models. However, millions of people continue to buy more affordable phones and are perfectly happy with them.

When making a call, you can’t tell the difference between phones. The same goes for reading emails, browsing the news, or using social media. The real differences emerge when taking photos, recording videos, or playing games. For me, these aren't compelling reasons to spend, say, €1,500 on a phone—though I could if I wanted to!

Anonymous, 16 Feb 2025Exactly. People here will always make excuses to justify wh... moreThese are not excuses; they are personal preferences and budget limitations. I also wouldn’t buy a phone close to or over €1,000 because it feels like a waste of money. The best solution is to wait until the price of the desired phone drops.

A few months ago, the Sony I V was available for €500 on Amazon (amazon.de), while the I VI was selling for €700+. These deals are no longer available, but they were great offers. I don’t need the latest model—I prefer buying well-tested models or later revisions of the same model, where hardware and software issues have been resolved.

It’s similar to buying cars: if you buy the first version, you’re likely to encounter many issues. But if you wait, the manufacturer will correct the mistakes and improve the product.

Years ago, I abandoned Sony phones for the same reason—only 1.5 years of major updates, followed by six months of security updates. Many bugs remained unresolved. Now, I own a Xiaomi Redmi Note with a similar policy: two major upgrades (already received) and small Google security updates for about another year.

On the other hand, Samsung offers years of support for a range of both weaker and stronger phones. I hate buying a new phone too soon, especially when my current one can last longer, and phone prices keep rising.

ASUS caught my interest with its small, compact Zenfone 9 and 10. The Zenfone 10 is still available in Europe for €599, though prices go up to over €900 in some online stores. These were intriguing phones—small yet powerful. However, ASUS doesn’t provide long-term support for them and has shifted back to larger screens in a market already flooded with big-screen models.

“None buy small phones!”—not true. I’ll probably invest in the Zenfone 10 just because it’s compact yet powerful. Unfortunately, I’ll have to accept the lack of long-term support.

THAT'S the way they can stand out compared to other manufacturers, even at this price or even a 100 euro price hike. They'd still be far cheaper than a Sony but they'd have most/all of the pros of an Xperia 1 series phone. Install gcam on this phone and you're in for a good time.

High price, no marketing is the reason why this will fail

They are behind when it comes to display, and camera tech as well not just OS updates, yet they price their phones insanely high. Asus could make absolutely top tier phones, they just aren't even trying.

Good after sale service is one of the reasons Vivo is doing so good, atleast here in india.

Asus doesn't care once their device is sold, delay in each update is also a reason why Asus barely sale their phones.

" I want small phone like iphone 13 mini, but I did not buy it because it was more than $450" and no cam system like pro max" ..

The price and Asus' poor reputation with handling customers doesn't help either.
