Trump's new tariffs push laptop prices up, Apple is absorbing the cost for now

19 February 2025
Other companies like Acer are passing it onto consumers, though.

Apple can't raise prices to make Trump look bad. The trade war has to benefit American companies after all, in some way, and not necessarily for American end-users. So non-USA companies will take the hit with this one, ultimately the consumers will take the hit while their government collects the tariff.

On Apple's side, this might encourage first time adopters to buy Apple computers, or those Windows users about to upgrade to switch.

Time will tell if these workout for Americans in their Trump 2.0 era.

In fact all of the costs will get down to customer, apple is "absorbing" the costs for about an year tops, when they release new models that are more expensive, as acustomed with apple, and they just include donalds drunk taxes into the price. Tada.

Only penny pinchers are complaining in the comments.

Companies have been for decades now manufacturing stuff in China for cheap while raising prices on their stuff. Now, its time to pay: they either come back to the US, move somewhere else outside of China or face lower sale numbers.

Apple is absorbing because they know in the long run, they will be able to move away and keep their current market position. On the other hand, Acer is trash, so not surprised by their decision, which is pretty funny because they are supposedly a Taiwanese company to begin with.

I'm not saying everyone should move away from China, but think people: if your brand claims to be European/American/Brazilian, but they make all of their products in China, they are pretty much Chinese in anything but name and headquarters. No hate to China, but its never good to have all your eggs in one basket.

all of this was sadly predicted. this is what happens when you elect an unqualified convicted felon/rapist who stole highly classified documents.

With the way Apple charge for RAM and storage upgrades, I’d say they have very comfortable margin to “absorb” the cost.

Increase salaries that haven't been increased since 1970 and this wouldn't be an issue.

Luckily bought a new laptop one mouth ago.

I guess we should thank all of the Americans here for voting for Trump. Who could have seen it coming? A TV show host, a greedy real estate developer, a convicted felon, sexist, racist, narcissistic...what a surprise that it's not going well!

[deleted post]As an American, it’s sad to see how whiny, insecure people like you would suffer just so minorities can suffer more than you. Get a life instead of whining on the internet about how much you want to oppress people

Laughable blaming ... moreIf a company's cost is increased, their profits get lower - inventors don't like seeing a digit go down, so the price of the item affected by said cost will go up as much as needed to avoid that profit digit from dropping.

Also, just because a tariff is 10%, that doesn't mean the cost will go up 10% -> if an item costs 180USD and your profits are 20USD, you have a 10% margin, if the price increases the cost to 200USD and you still want 20USD profits - your margin is now 9.09% - so guess what the investors will demand you do to said item's price and who will pay for it...

[deleted post]Because removing an initiative that does a lot of good (more than you ever will) is more important than something that negatively affects the average American citizen. What a joke.

Absorb what? As if apple was ever cheap! Laughable blaming corporate greed on a new president when it is well know Apple inflates their China prices way above 1000%
