The problem for Apple will come in a few years because Verizon (and to a lesser extent AT&T) will demand MMWave on the mainstream iPhone lineup. So if Apple wants to rely upon their own modem, they'll need to figure out MMWave, which, to the best of my understanding, means they'll need to license patents from their food friends at Qualcomm. Alternatively, we may see Apple continue to purchase Qualcomm modems and antennas, but only for US model phones (just like we're the only country to not get a physical SIM slot anymore). At least the CDMA days are over, which would have made the even more complicated.

Pretty sure that was their plan all along. Qualcomm, MediaTek, Huawei, Unisoc all integrate the modem into their SOC. There are advantages to doing this including reduced cost and latency.

The chip won't be made by Apple themselves! They can't do such. It will be manufactured by another company, as always.

Maybe by then, the modem will be part of the NPU for better AI performance. Who knows? 😂
