Huawei Pocket 3 is a smaller iPad mini that folds

25 February 2025
Its folding screen will allegedly have the same aspect ratio as Apple's smallest tablet.

4:3/2=2:3 change angle =3:2
3:2/2=3:4 " " =4:3
(this is not 2x crop. There are geometrical ways use more space. I'm not saying this or that is good or bad over one another. Also the article is not about sensor but display.)

You can either go both way or neither way. Both wast space nearly the same.
(yeah the more the ratio is near 1 the more space it has for the same diagonal length)

A 3:2 screen held vertically will be taller than a 4:3 screen of the same diagonal.

      Anonymous, 25 Feb 2025How is 4:3 (= 1,33) taller (ie. longer) than 3:2 (= 1,5)...?When you have a fixed width (let's have 1920px as an example), 1920px on a 4:3 would be 1440px in height. By contrast, 1920px on a 3:2 would be 1280px in height.

Come to think about it, why would 21:9, 24:10, and 32:9 ultrawide monitors exist in the first place? If I really need to use a taller screen, I just get myself a rotating portable monitor tqvm.

Anonymous, 25 Feb 20253:2 is good for photography. Not really. You can't have 4:3 photo without cropping a chunk out of a native 3:2 sensor. It's the reason Sony's Xperia Pro-i has an equivalent sensor size of 1/1.3" despite using a native 1" RX100 camera sensor because of the 4:3 crop from the native 1" 3:2 sensor.

Remember, 4:3 is taller than 3:2. You can crop 3:2 photos out of a native 4:3 camera sensor without losing all the sensor size areas, but not the other way around.

I was quite skeptical when I read 3:2 at first... It's completely new. And so blocky...

              ...Right?

It's not like any other phone would have tried an even blockier ratio before, like 4:3. The iPhone 2G/3G, 4... Damn, those were absolutely unsuable...

Jokes aside, I'm a reluctant Mini user and I beg for an Android-sized Mini. But since it's not gonna happen, I'm open to other ideas. Past the initial skepticism, I'm thinking it could be interesting on a daily basis. I'm very curious, and I can't wait to try it out and see what it's gonna be like.

THAT IS... If it comes with Android outside of China, bc they can keep their Har-money for themselves.

I think the purpose should be either a phone that folds in half or, a phone that unfolds into a bigger screen. you have to be able to carry a phone aspect ratio (19:9 to 22:9) at some point. it is not possible to deliver a main daily driver using a 3:2 aspect ratio unless it rolls one side of the screen out to expand aspect ratio, then rolls back in to a 20:9. otherwise, it can be secondary device only.

Personally, I prefer 3:2 screens, 16:9 on a laptop is just too narrow to do anything useful other than video playback. Moreover, you can watch 16:9 videos on a 3:2 or 4:3 , aspect ratio doesn't matter, only size matters.
That is why Huawei advertised it's monitors for their 3:2 aspect ratio, it is much better.

They're fine if you mostly stay in Portrait mode doing document work, but it's useless when watching videos or live streams. I still maintain that 16:9 is the best screen for mass media, but I can go 16:10 for larger custom screen resolutions beyond the typical FHD and QHD standards.

3:2? That's the same aspect ratio my Blackberry Key2 has, and it sucks. Ignoring the fact that the main reason i hate it is because of the fact that if they removed the dedicated navigation buttons, it could fit 16:9, it's very inconvenient. I like to change the system aspect ratio to 16:9 in settings whenever im consuming content. A phone with a 3:2 display lacking the keyboard is going to look very weird.
