27 February 2025
Honor Magic7 RSR Porsche Design comes with an improved telephoto camera and a different sensor on its main camera - so are there meaningful image quality improvements with the special edition phone?

Michalis, 28 Feb 2025Do y'all hate your jobs over there at GSM? There'... moreI think you need your eyes checked. The RSR images are really over-exposed, display very poor sharpness in many of the photos and lack detail. The 7 Pro are underexposed in some photos, but across the board have better detail and sharpness - in some of the samples wildly better.

Do y'all hate your jobs over there at GSM? There's a night and day difference between the night samples of the telephoto, with the f/1.9 clearly letting in a lot more light and detail. This reads like something that was hastily written by someone that barely glanced at the samples.

vik457, 28 Feb 2025What I'm speaking of is that there are hp9 and ov50m, ... moretout a 1/1.3" and a 1/1.4" sensor yet use inferior versions of them. That way no one can reliably complain about these yet you can easily save money. smart strategy from Honor.

jiyen235, 28 Feb 2025The processing is hit or miss, sometimes the RSR is overexp... moreWhat's also disappointing is that they haven't upgraded sensors to their successors even on magic7 rsr

              Thank you Gsmarena!

The processing is hit or miss, sometimes the RSR is overexposed, sometimes it lacks contrast, sometimes it's too warm whereas sometimes the magic7 is warmer. It just seems extremely inconsistent.

But the RSR does indeed have a far superior lens, despite being brighter in most shots, the shots just look FAR superior, lower noise and better looking stuff in daylight but at night time the shots look a tad artificial at points, perhaps overcompensating for something?

I'm a huge fan of the design as well, far better than the Mate 70 Pro copycat that is the Magic7 Pro. They should've released the RSR as the Pro. The Pro's just not it. Even then, these cameras just aren't consistent enough for a modern day flagship. Xiaomi's phones have the style, these don't have that either.

Unless you're into this phone for the face unlocking, excellent selfie cam and the astonishing speakers i don't really see any reason to get this.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Sofia is nice at this time of year.

RSR's telephoto lens shows a very busy bokeh despite having one of the largest aperture openings on any smartphone - Hard outlines around highlights and a LOT of green fringing. This makes you realise why Vivo was advertising to be using an apochromat lens for the telephoto on X100 Ultra, like if you take a closer look at Vivo's samples you see that they barely have any coloured outlines where things are out of focus.

At least having a wide aperture means it's far less diffraction-limited than telephoto lenses in any other smartphones (RSR's tele samples look extremely sharp when shooting at infinity), and the low-light photos look spectacular, so I guess it still brings more pros than cons.

Apart from the fact that gsmarena again forgot to take photos at 12x (200 megapixel sensors theoretically allow for 4 times as much reach as a 12.5 megapixel sensor, 4*3x = 12x), it seems that the Magic7 RSR and the Magic7 Pro already have big issues with the Quad Bayer array (4-1 binning) at 6x.

As a photographer I immediately noticed the differences and the RSR is way ahead. The main cameras are quite comparable but the telephotos couldn't be further apart. The detail rendering, white balance, colors, everything on the RSR looks more like it was shot on a more professional camera. The nice softness and less oversharpened look is more pleasing and it's obvious you can gather more light, therefore increase your shutter speed and lower the iso when needed

Less oversharpening in the RSR plus in the daylight 3x shots pic 5 and6 the grill on the ground was totally washed out in the pro but was clearly seen in the RSR
Yordan's beard seems oversharpened in the pro , so you have benefits but the price......

                              700€ price premium, no thanks.

Well, it's not like I expected the RSR to perform much better with its cameras, cause after all, it's not a photography edition, it's a Porsche Design edition. If anything, I would've expected it to come with wheels and drive me around a bit. But oh, well, companies these days... lacking any innovation... Maybe next year, Honor? 😂
