Xiaomi Modular Optical System concept hands-on

Although still a concept, it almost felt like a finished product.

    - Instant connection without lag.
    - It's integrated into the phone's software giving it all the benefit of powerful processing.
    - It doesn't require additional power/separate charging.

This could very well become the next thing.

I think that this is such a great idea. Because you can have even a phone that is with mediocre cameras, but when you need to take a good photo, you can use the real lense and get it. The only thing that is a concern for me is how strong does the magnets hold the lens?

I sent this idea in full in pdf file to xiaomi & honor in November 2024 - I have my email and xiaomi replied to my email. But I hope they were working on this idea before my idea reached them. Because they didn't give me any reply that they are working on this idea

Cool. Wonder why so many people on YouTube were pretending like this is so original and revolutionary. As SONY didn't do an objectively better job over 11 years ago with their QX10 and QX100 with the tech available at the time. It wasn't a proprietary connector, the photography was pure optica and no computational lie or pixel binning, true optical zoom, one of the variants had xenon flash if I remember correctly.

And again, you could use it with any smartphone of your choice as long as it had Wi-Fi. You could use it standalone or even control remotely from a distance.

Yeah magnets look more elegant and I'm not downplaying Xiaomi but better is better no matter how you look at it. A concept product that works only with 1 model from the same brand.

Sony revisited, I had one of the Sony camera add on devices about 10 years ago.

Anonymous, 05 Mar 2025Lens used on phones have 5-7 elements with almost same shap... moreThe interesting part about this lens is that its optical construction very much looks like a normal smartphone lens, just larger - Only seven elements in total, five aspherical elements and barely any gaps between each of them, according to Xiaomi's official presentation video. Impressively enough, it seems barely any bigger than F1.7 or F1.8 lenses from Panasonic or OM Systems of a comparable field of view.

Of course, this means that there might be lots of onion rings if the lens surfaces aren't polished enough, but I expect it to be very sharp from wide open and well-corrected for abberations. For a compact lens as a phone attachment, it's quite impressive I would say.

Very good implementation! But have a feeling that this going to be very expensive.

It is kinda refreshing. We are finally getting closer to using computational photography on bigger sensors.
That being said, it would be nice if they could get rid of the proprietary connectors and use the USB-C to connect it. You could use all the 10+gbps to give super responsive interface and also perform computationally intensive tasks live HDR, live ND, multi-stacking etc.

I think it's better to use a DSLR camera, which can be connected directly via Bluetooth or WiFi to a smartphone. So after taking a photo, we can transfer it to a smartphone.

NoOne75, 05 Mar 20251) MFT Cropfactor is x2 - so the Sensor is smaller than APS... more3,4) This uses a Quad Bayer sensor, so at 1x it shoots a regular 25MP image. Only when shooting in a crop mode, say 2x, it switches to the full resolution mode to minimise the resolution loss.

                              6) It has a display that can reach 1500 nits (at 75% APL) outdoors, so visibility would hardly be a problem even under direct sunlight.

You make a good point regarding 2), but given that this is a concept camera I expect the actual product to be more refined (assuming it would ever be released in the first place).

Anonymous, 05 Mar 2025" Although it's reminiscent of past attempts from... moreNope, Xiaomi's approach is completely different from Sony's.

The former essentially enables the camera module to be used as the primary camera of a phone, meaning all components that are not relevant to capturing an image have been omitted and all the image processing takes place within the phone, allowing for more advanced processing + potentially more consistent tonal and colour renditions between the camera module and built-in cameras.

On the other hand, Sony's camera "modules" were, in fact, just a small dedicated camera - They had their own ISPs, batteries and SD card slots, but only displayed live preview on a smartphone screen via Bluetooth because they didn't have a monitor. This means that you could use them on any smartphone, though the downside is the battery and storage having to be prepared separately, a substantial delay in image transfer between the camera and the phone and (obviously) limited processing capability.

It's either universal compatibility or seamless ecosystem.
