Weekly poll: can the Nothing Phone (3a) or the Phone (3a) Pro be your next phone

16 March 2025
The young brand is going into its third generation of phones with a focus on mid-rangers first, a flagship will come later on.

I'm picking the pro partly because of the camera and partly because of esim that the vanilla 3a doesn't support

      Waiting for Nothing Phone 3..

vik457, 16 Mar 2025Why didn't they use that sensor for ultrawide?Maybe supply constraints? Maybe margins would be too low to be profitable enough to survive for a company the size of Nothing? Maybe they got an extremely good and cheap deal with those 8MP ultrawides? Whatever it is, I don't think Nothing is trying to price fix like Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus and Oppo are doing at this price range.

I don't care about cameras much myself, bought th nothing 3a phone and seems good so far. I've only played final fantasy 7 ever crisis on it but it plays well and does everything else a phone does at a good price. Didn't want a Chinese brand phone in the age of CCP and their desire to invade Taiwan (never know if your phone will suddenly get locked out or you lose access to Google services etc. / spying on your data). Nothing gave me a chance to get a cheaper phone than Samsung that works very well for normal use anyway.

Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is unfortunately, very uncompetitive for mid-range phones.

Sure, a good chip doesn't 100% guarantee a good phone, but a mediocre chip 100% guarantees a mediocre phone.

Not a fan of the slow UFS 2.2 storage. Id prefer the OnePlus Nord 4 to be honest.

Instead of using a pedestrian ultrawide, they could've gone for an ultrawide main camera, as seen in Sharp's R8 series. That would've saved some cash for manufacturing, if they can't provide anything sensible.

phone (3a) pro is very good, only second to realme 14 pro+

[deleted post]I mean, on paper both of these devices look great until you look at the ultrawide. The 3a Pro should've definitely had an SD 7 Gen 3 and a 50MP ultrawide, but at the same time, a €470 phone with a 3× periscope that uses the LYT-600 for it is a pretty interesting value proposition. Not even Vivo's more expensive €600+ V50 Pro does this, and that phone is already very interesting.

The 3a is very good too. You don't get a telephoto at around this price from anyone else except for Motorola, and their phone is still more expensive.

Perhaps maybe even SD 7 Gen 3 + 13MP ultrawide using the GalaxyCore GC13A2 sensor?

Replacing the distinctive 50MP ultrawide from the first 2 iterations with a pedestrian 8MP ultrawide used in BBK phones is an unforgivable compromise (given that it had been spammed on various Vivo S/Y, IQOO Z series, OnePlus Ace/R series and the Oppo Reno devices in particular).

Also, the HMD Skyline is a better phone overall compared to this, given that it's reduced between 45-60% from it's launch price. This has the same chipset (an iteration newer doesn't mean it's a better purchase for the extra cash), while the HMD has the upper hand for repairability and much better selection of cameras. Looking at the pricing trend of the previous devices, they've overpriced this for no reason imho.

vik457, 16 Mar 2025https://en.gcoreinc.com/news/detail-66Saw the exact link when searching up the sensor. It's pretty interesting what GalaxyCore is doing, even if they're relatively small and not widely used outside of in budget and certain mid-range devices.
