Well from a Europe standpoint it's equally bad if TokTok is going to be yet another american controlled social stream.

Too authoritarian and aggressive to neighbouring countries, too focused on oppression and repression and one we can't trust due to this? CCP has a laundry list of corruption and oppression and even think they can just choose who the Dalai Lama is haha. They're so obsessed with their corruption they think religious people will just believe them, suppose brainwashing might make that happen since they use the great fire wall to deny their people the right to free thought.

Yes, they can, and so many companies has been doing this since long time ago. Apart from some integration with Microsoft services, LinkedIn and GitHub development are pretty much "autonomous". Microsoft is pretty much "hands-off" in the development of both of these applications.
> Everyone knows that TikTok is only nominally headquartered in Singapore for PR purposes
Yeah, you don't need to call yourself as "everyone".
> China's national security law requires Bytedance/TikTok to feed Beijing with users' data upon demand.
*Chinese citizen users' data. That's why "Douyin" existed, and "TikTok" is banned in China. As long as you're a Chinese citizen, CCP couldn't care less about you.
> Furthermore, it's widely known that Douyin and TikTok share the same codebase, with only a few algorithmic tweaks between the two.
share the same codebase ≠ share the same server. TikTok's global server doesn't have any relation with Douyin's China server.
In the end, you cannot accept the truth, well because "China bad hurr durr, US is our savior hurr durr."

I said "it's one of the few apps where censorship and moderation are not as strict as those apps I mentioned before." You can freely posts anything about Isreal h4te, pr0n, g0r3, piracy, etc. with smaller chance to get ban as long as you're posting on the right sub.
Try to do that on the Instagram. Let's see if you can even post one in the first place.

403 Forbidden, 26 Mar 2025Ah yes, another "America gud China bad" comment. ... moreAmericans get taught about what their ancestors did in the past, in school. There's lessons on the Trails of tears, roosevelt internment camps, the list goes on. american apps don't cover up anything. they aren't 'hidden in the algorithm', they mostly don't exist - Amanda is posting pictures of her salad with strawberries and almonds in it, not American war crimes lol. The only thing I needed to see to know you don't know what you're talking about is that 'reddit isn't moderated'. Anything to the right at all gets modded, deleted, removed, downvoted, etc. Right now you can't even post a link from xitter on most subs

which law tho? Funny that you mention about "hostile ownership" when companies like Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Netflix, Disney, etc. existed.
> It's pretty rich to demand that TikTok be allowed to manipulate Americans when Google, Facebook, et. al. are banned for daring to speak the truth about Tiananmen, Tibet, and Taiwan, and the only other argument is to spew antisemitism
Just like how those American apps cover up the war crimes that America committed against the Indians in the past? Or the crimes of Japan (US' ally) who did bad things (won't mention what's that here) to Korean? Pretty sure those things will never appear Instagram, Facebook, Twitter's algorithm. And oh yeah, don't forget about the Isreal hate comment. Pretty much you're not allowed to talk about that there.
Won't mention Reddit because it's one of the few apps where censorship and moderation are not as strict as those apps I mentioned before.

Simply owning a company doesn't change a "nationality" of a brand. In most cases the parent company is only a "funder" to the subsidiary and the parent company does not interfere in the development of the subsidiary's products. The entire development and production of Land Rover products are still done in the UK. Same goes to TikTok. ByteDance in China only handles the development of Douyin. While TikTok's development (the one that's only available for global users) is mostly done in Singapore.

403 Forbidden, 26 Mar 2025It's a Singaporean company, owned by a Chinese company... moreThe owner of the company is the owner of the company. Land Rover is a British brand that is a subsidiary of Tata, so yes, its an Indian company. TikTok is owned by Bytedance and is headquartered in Beijing. If you don't know what a parent company is or how corporate structures work, don't comment. TikTok being incorporated in the Caymans doesn't make it a Caribbean company either 😄

TicTok ban is based purely on the easy access to this media by teenagers. They speak their mind and the so called controllers are getting nervous.
TicToc platform has a lot of stuff on flat earth, which is greatly controlled on YT.
My teenage daughter shows me some funny postings and I love the creativity of TicToc contributors.

Republicans have the majority in the House and Senate and can change the law if they wanted to. Trump is not enforcing those penalties. Apple and Google can rest easy knowing that they weren't be fined.
