Smartphones and tablets to get a new EU energy efficiency labels in June, here's what they mean

21 April 2025
The requirements for devices in the EU will apply from June 20, 2025.

5 years of OS updates being mandatory is a little ridiculous, how the hell can a company outside of Samsung justify that on a €100 phone? Hopefully they can reduce it to security updates.

Overall though these changes are going to make phones a lot more expensive

I don't know. I don't think this will be any helpful or truthful to the consumer. Greed finds a way, and vendors will find a way to crank out the best numbers. Personally I prefer to find the very few honest reviewers on youtube or ask a friend who has a device I am interested to see how it is.

I don't see this being practical, after trial and error I feel most consumers know what brands to stay away from due to past disappointments. I am savvy enough to do my own research just bc I have had enough not getting what has been advertised.

Sony and Asus could stop selling anything in EU because of the low volume they sell.
Chinese brands have bigger volumes, will comply with this.
We will see what happens to price.

Like their Playstation that is not made for everyone as you need to be in specific country to get to make account in there. Never mind that Sony phones have always being expensive.
Asus can't even give more then 2 years OS while ask higher price then Samsung flagships

Anonymous, 21 Apr 2025Basically only samsung and apple will be able to afford this . I don't think it will be quite that restrictive, but this will not help consumers or market competition, and will just drive out lower cost options. So goodbye sub-€300 phones everyone.

There will be brands stop selling cellphones in Europe because of this.
                    First rumor is Sony.
I bet on asus and htc to follow.

                      Xiaomi = F or G

With such label, several phones from some brands would rot forever on shelves. On the other hand, they would use that as marketing for other models and even raise their price.

I would not have a sticker like that on my phone and if there was I take the dam thing off as soon as I got the phone !

I agreed with all...but for battery I want higher standards..
For example Chinese phones doing 1600 at least charging cycles... They should make batterys with more than 2000..
How many of us we had phones in great condition but the battery declined...
Phones should last 5-7 years without battery dropping capacity..

The same way as Samsung, or didn't you notice how many models Samsung releases each year?

"Or they won't be sold in the EU ... 🤔❓"
Then we would end up like USA, where you can choose from Apple, Google and Samsung or small players like Asus and Sony.
What a win that would be. /sarcasm

Is this why Chinese phone brands now promise up to 6 years of updates in Europe?

It's unfortunate that this label doesn't state years of software support so it would publicly shame brands that offer poor software support and it would also force companies to openly state their update policies with fixed status so it's not like "we may offer 3 years of updates, but we may just as well do none". No one will complain if it's more, but minimum needs to be openly defined so buyer can instantly know without digging through pages of online results hoping they have the right info on that.

Interestingly, these "soap operas" like Redmi, Poco, Infonix and others like them, which are being pushed onto the assembly line three/four models per year, how will they provide software and parts for 5 years❓😂😂😂.
