Because the computational power increased too! You forget about the most important factor - - > applications. They use much more memory they are much more complex, able to do much more things. Having a 32gb memory was enough back then. Now 128gb memory is considered as meh. Take it from game graphics to a simple application like camera. Back then they didn't need to have so many features. They were barely dealing with 720p recording. Nowadays 4k 60fps is normal thing for shooting. You need to back it up with stronger tech and you need to make it efficient too.
"And, if components are so tiny now, why are we stuck with 8mm+ thick phones, some even having hideous 15mm+ camera bumps?
Where's that "innovation" going, exactly?"
Look! if you're okay with having a super tiny phone with a single camera module like iPhone se, it's possible. You forget the factor that in time phones evolved towards the camera. At least, the flagship level let's say. The camera module's size is important if you can't back it up with computational power. They use at least 3 for a flagship and that covers a big area and causing that big bump. Now they're growing battery too. Much with the new technology. Innovation goes in a way to keep up with the computational power. You look at it from the hardware perspective. You need to consider software too...
.
"It seems some "progress" just made our pockets bulge more, companies got lazy.
Like Samsung, for not trying to use silicon batteries, yet."
Some companies are doing it. It's up to the users to keep them alive. Poor LG did most of the th e innovative things and they stopped the phone division. Sony is trying sth. Chinese companies are trying too.
Samsung became the next Apple. This is the problem with every innovative company that they focus on making revenue after they start being the leader in market and get comfy.
Why should they care whether they innovate or not as long as users keep buying it and showing demand?
They'll slow it down to a point to increase the lace when required. :)
Apple and Samsung have the crowns for massive amounts of sales and people keep buying no matter how little they improve.
Don't blame the messenger...

And companies are intentionally lazy, so that they can force users upon planned obsolescence, leading to extreme profits and high levels of e-waste.

ProMaxUltraAreBricks, 17 hours agoYeah, those "legacy" features that only Sony seem... more"But also, back then, batteries were smaller because there were less power-hungry components..."
Face palm... Face palm... Face palm...
The level of ignorance...
There were less power-hungry components?
The components included inside phones were literally more!
And they were literally using much more energy especially due to the level of innovation and technology used at the time. A phone could barely finish day!
SoC were terrible at using energy, chips were manufactured with bigger transistors. Nowadays we're talking about 3nm back then 14nm was simply normal. They were power hungry big time!
Same goes to the other components. Wi-Fi, BT modules, integrated DAC (we used to have a place for headphone jack despite the size was smaller)...
Using cellular was quickly draining battery even with 3g... Being connected to Wifi same, it was draining the battery much more quickly.
BT wasn't even efficient, not even up to level we got nowadays with version 5.4 / 6. Didn't even have efficient codecs like lh3 back then.
Phones had additional features like
-heart monitor on Galaxy models
-LG was including quad DAC for HiFi enthusiasts
-Micro sd card reading slots!
-Fingerprint reader wasn't under screen, they were mounted on the side or back. Plenty of additional components were used! I can keep counting!
"no nearly borderless 120Hz AMOLED screens, vapor chamber cooling, wireless charging coils, water protection or ultrasonic scanners."
Focusing on refresh rate meanwhile forgetting displays were more dense back then with android phones. More brands were going up to qhd with smaller sizes!
Vapor chamber cooling is sth super tiny! We're talking about a mm thick layer! The technology with amoled displays wasn't even improved back then so displays got slimmer! Add on the top of this the motherboards got smaller allowing brands to squeeze even more in Device's thickness!
Wireless charging coil is similar story to vapor chamber. The thickness is barely noticeable considering the volume it takes!
Water protection is a ridiculous argument! It doesn't add up to the size of the components! Rather on the parts in the entry points and a easy compensation with glue / rubber looking materials! Early Sony xperia phone had it back then with much more modules along with power hungry components!
"If you want to make even thinner devices today, you will have to make many compromises, or innovate but it takes time to resolve these with current components."
Da!
The current components are much smaller, much much more efficient! Yet the paper thin phone that you dream off is in the far far future. We need to gain more knowledge in the quantum physic and learn more about particles to make invisible device in your hand! There's another solution which involves hallucinations! I recommend you that!

Minu, 18 hours agoLet's not forget that BBK, Gionee and Samsung had phon... moreYeah, those "legacy" features that only Sony seems brave enough to include some in their flagships these days, it's a sad state.
But also, back then, batteries were smaller because there were less power-hungry components, no nearly borderless 120Hz AMOLED screens, vapor chamber cooling, wireless charging coils, water protection or ultrasonic scanners.
If you want to make even thinner devices today, you will have to make many compromises, or innovate but it takes time to resolve these with current components.
Like here, with this Edge, they should have used silicon batteries, this is a missed opportunity for true thinness without sacrificing capacity.
But hey, give them time, nobody wants the Note 7 fireworks back.

I remember Symbian Belle phones being faster than iOS 7, despite being older with barebones specifications. If anything, Apple has fluid animations, but looks don't equal to functionality, after all.

Cant show anything new or interesting on device? MAKE IT FLAT!
We had that trend around 2015 and it went away faster than battery life on those devices...
Motorola Moto Z? 5.2mm
Oppo R5? 4.9mm
Samsung A8? 5.9mm
Vivo x5max? 5.1mm
Only reason why we stopped doing it is because of battery size, Its not screen, its not chip, its not technology, its all due to batteries, and for past years none of companies used any new technology(that exist, work, but companies dont want to invest in it) in that aspect of the phone so we can all guess that battery will be tragic on that phone.

When designing a slim phone, you should make it small too cos the larger/longer the size is, the easier it gets to snap into two
