Not surprised if this decision is being made because of Trump. I get his "America First" agenda, but he really needs to take a break from it.

There are definitely pros and cons, and knowing Sony's cautious nature as a Japanese company, I doubt they'd rush into this.
The argument for it seems to be about letting the sensor business get more investment because some investors specifically want to put money into that kind of tech. While the sensor division is under Sony, those specific investors might be missing out. However, it's also possible that Sony's current diverse portfolio, including the strong sensor business, already attracts a different kind of investor.
The idea isn't necessarily about Sony getting new money overall, as they're already public. It's more about the sensor business potentially being valued higher as its own company, which could ultimately benefit Sony's current shareholders.
One interesting thought is that if the sensor division becomes its own stable entity, maybe the rest of Sony (PlayStation, movies, etc.) could take more risks and be more innovative without jeopardizing the whole company.
You know Sony – they're great at tech, especially sensors, but sometimes their decisions based on what customers actually want seem a bit slow or off. So, just because the sensor business gets more investment as its own thing doesn't automatically mean better products for us.
I also wonder how this would affect their professional cameras, since they make their own amazing sensors. Would they become just another customer?
Overall, while the idea of more investment and a potentially higher valuation for the sensor business sounds good on paper, we also need to consider Sony's conservative approach and how this split might impact their other successful divisions. It's probably not a done deal, and these news reports could even be trying to nudge Sony in that direction. So, take it all with a grain of salt!

Sony is finally monopolized by the US, I'm sorry for Sony's bankruptcy, Trump really did something despicable, destroying the company to control it. Sony will be under pressure to make a profit And the censorship policy for America is very timely, when Apple sees the opportunity to put the New 48mp camera on the iPhone 17 Series. 😭

Probably the only division other than PlayStation that makes any money. Sony have been on the verge of going under for ages now, just clinging on!
