Vegetaholic, 03 May 2025LCD is ancient technology and should not exist anymore. I a... moreThen why are they increasing the frequency (and claiming its more eye friendly), if it was doing no harm before .
You don't fix a problem if they're wasn't one to start with .
Can you imagine going to a doctor and them giving you some medication that you we're allergic to and then saying "tuff luck" and not give you an alternative .
That's what oleds are like for PWM sufferers.

Why can't we have an LCD alternative of the same model, then people can't get upset because they would have a choice.

Oled is a flawed technology .
If the only reason why it actually exists, is because they found a way of tricking your brain into seeing a different brightness (and it wouldn't even work properly if they didn't), then it is definitely flawed.

Also oled have there downside too .

A lot of oleds have terrible colour shift at angles (the oppo reno 12 turn nearly completely green )

Some have bad haloing around whites on black backgrounds .

They have trouble displaying Grey's ( a lot shimmer if you look closely).

The claim of infinite contrast is a semantical answer, because yes it can turn off it's pixels to display absolute blacks , but what about other content like between darker colours and whites , the contrast could still be poor between those colours.
Like for example the washed out mudge of an Amoled on the nothing 2a , even the LCD on my Motorola had better colours and contrast than that phone (I compared them side by side).

Another downside is that because of PWM the lower you set the brightness the less time the screen is actually on , and there for you have a lower frame rate the lower you set the brightness and because of this the image can becomes more choppy (depending on the implementation).

They've pretty much solved screen burn nowadays (for the average user), so I won't list that as a flaw .

Now don't get me wrong there are some fantastic oleds (the one on my Nubia z50 for one) and I would take that one over an LCD any day , (if it didn't make me sick that is).

But some LCD'S can be very good too . (Motorola g35 , vivo y35 , ulefone 23 ultra , htc U Ultra , LG V30 ).

But I understand the haters because there are a lot of rubbish ones (I can't deny that) .
But I think that's more down to the fact that nobody invests in the technology anymore.

I couldn't use the Honor magic 7 pro for this reason because it had those 2 rates that you mentioned. Whereas Honor magic 5 pro only had one of the higher ones which was absolutely perfect for my eyes and causes no strain at all.

Anonymous, 05 May 2025Nice, Google is going in the right direcrion. Will move fro... moreWhere did you get this from?

astolfo, 02 May 2025 Go check any LCD on those supermarket cashiers and see ho... moreWas walking past Samsung store in a big shopping centre a while ago, (was with mates and just going for some food so walking past), saw an 8k mini led TV with a 4k nano crystal or whatever and a 4k oled next to that.

All 3 of us AND the shop salesmen there said the oled looked the best, you cannot beat true blacks and infinite contrast (even Vs the 8k TV right above it). We also all would of chose the 4k oled, all Samsung flagship screens so it wasn't an unfair comparison.

It is important not to forget that the presence of a second frequency in the operation of an OLED screen is not a solution to the problem. Many Chinese phones claim that their frequency is extremely high, for example, 1440 Hz, but they forget to mention that this is just "one of" the frequencies, and the main 120 Hz frequency is still there; it is just made slightly weaker than the secondary one.

            For example:

Google Pixel 4 XL - one frequency at 360 Hz
OnePlus 8 - one frequency at 258 Hz
Motorola Edge 30 Fusion - one frequency at 753 Hz
OnePlus 13 - main frequency 120 Hz, second frequency 4166 Hz
Xiaomi Poco F7 Ultra - main frequency 120 Hz, second frequency 3125 Hz

Therefore, in addition to the alternative, less significant frequency, there should also be a good implementation of DC dimming. Let us see what implementation Google will use; I expect a high-quality solution from them.

If this is true, then I will upgrade my current Pixel 5.

I also have a problem with PWM. But there are already displays that offer a very high PWM frequency, which is great. For example, I now use 1+ 13 with a PWM frequency 2160 Hz and I have absolutely no eye pain compared to my old 1+ 10 Pro, which has a display that has a 360 Hz PWM frequency. Thank God, Chinese manufacturers already use such displays. Hopefully the greedy Apple, Google and Samsung will start doing it! At least Google is making the first steps already with a pixel ...

Thankfully I don't seem to be PWM-sensitive, so I've preferred OLED phones for dimmer night viewing ever since the first-gen Galaxy. That said, I prefer IPS for computer monitors so I can use them all-day every-day without burn-in worries.
