Weekly poll: would you buy the Sony Xperia 1 VII?

25 May 2025
This phone has a unique combination of features, but it's priced so high that it competes with every Ultra flagship out there.

I have the 1 VI, so no reason for me to get this.

    You are joking surely 🫵😆

I wouldn't buy Sony Xperia phone for the following reasons:

When unlocking bootloader the camera becomes unusable.

Naming scheme is a catastrophe. For over a decade their phones are called Xperia. It's about time to come up with a new name. You too Samsung!
Xperia 1 7 are you serious? What a confusing name for a phone. So is it called Xperia 1 or Xperia 7 or both? Seriously they need to fire those illiterate employees that come up with these names.

And the price shouldn't be more than $500

Now you know why I wouldn't buy it. You're welcome

The price has always been the reason I never bought an Xperia. They are amazing phones though.

The price is brutal, but as long as they keep including SD card and headphone jack, I'll keep sticking with Sony. I totally understand that for most people those aren't huge selling points, but for my purposes they are the two most important features.

As an Xperia 1 VI user, probably not. If you're from something older than the 1 V it'll be worth it. The software, ultrawide and it's new AI stuff, brighter screen, and of course jack and micro SD is pretty convenient in the long run. But maybe not at that price. Better wait for it to go lower.

I would have bought one since it includes a HQ output headphone jack, a microSD slot, front-facing stereo speakers, a display without a punch hole or notch, excellent cameras, a flagship SoC, and other compelling features. However, the software support isn’t the best, the OS updates tend to be slow and sometimes buggy (it’s improved now, but update coverage was worse in the past). The UI generally aims for a stock Android feel, yet in areas where Sony’s custom UI appears, it looks a bit dated.

Additionally, while the 4K screen was overkill, I’d still prefer a 2K display over an FHD one, especially since (From personal experience) I can see the difference between 2K and FHD on phones of the same size. I understand that FHD may offer better battery efficiency and smoother gaming performance due to lower rendering demands, but for a phone at this price point, a 2K screen would be more appropriate.

From experience, I’d also favor an under-screen ultrasonic fingerprint reader (like the 3D Sonic Max) rather than having it on the side button. For example, I experienced many accidental unlocks when I pressed the power button merely to see the time (since the double-tap-to-wake feature doesn’t always work).

Furthermore, I believe the device could have benefited from a few additional improvements. A larger Si-Ca battery would extend battery life without significantly increasing the phone’s bulk and faster charging (Though not something extreme) would be a welcomed enhancement. Moreover, at least the 512GB storage version would have been more appealing if it came with 16GB of 12nm LPDDR5X memory instead for better performance and future-proofing. Gorilla Armor 2 would have been a great addition too, thanks to its anti-reflective coating, though that feature is probably reserved for Samsung flagships for now.

*Like others said, it would have been nice to have FM radio support and an infrared controller functionality as well.

Kinda like Sony's design. However, my main beef is the OS, which is not as feature rich as other skins like OneUI. Which is too bad.

And, nitpicking people will always found something to protest about on any phone. I plan to buy I VI or I VII, depending on the price (the lower the better). I don't look at Samsung and Iphone and don't care if they have 10 more fantastic features I DON'T NEED. This is a topic about Sony.

I would, but not at this price. Perhaps I'll go for I VI, and buy that model. Don't care much about OS upgrades if it works without major glitches.

Without a U.S. version, probably not. Currently running Mark V. Don't want to limp on an unsupported variant.

I have been with Sony phones for over 20 years before they changed to android. Now with the market share of phones now getting smaller and with Sony not producing their own products to complement the phone eg smartwatches, tablets etc, I have decided to go to another like either Samsung or Apple. Customer support with Sony leaves a lot to be desired and their smartphone features even on the new phone doesn't seem to impress me as the camera facility is as good on the company's previously mentioned.
                                  Sorry Sony.

to properly take advantage of phones with memory card slots is to use it as a back up storage. Use your internal storage to record or take pics, when you're starting to run low, transfer them to your memory card. The micr SD card is plenty fast for reading your data, including your 4k video @ 120 fps. Or make your micro SD card your storage for photos. then just transfer the vids when you run out of space on your internal. This have been my way of using it especially when I went to Coachella. Those 4k vids eat up a lot of storage.and cloud is slow AF, and you will need a really fast connection. You can have a really bad signal and nothing cloud-related will work but the micro SD card will save you in a pinch.

A flagship phone should have them all: high resolution display, connectivity, speeds (USB 3+!), good cameras (without any plugs and fakes), good materials, premium finishing, and so forth.
There's not an argument, that people don't buy this phone, although it has SD and jack. It doesn't have other things that cont.
People buy phones all the time, and choose, accept the best compromises. This phone, IMO, lack important things and it's expensive.
