The iPhone 17 and 17 Air may have 120Hz displays, but without the ProMotion features

Rest assured Apple will find a way to make the Pro model displays better in some ways so that people keep buy the more expensive models. If the vanilla models had the same display as Pro models, most people would buy the cheaper ones and that would be terrible for profits.

So 3 generations later they catch up. Not even that, it's still a worse screen even though the price for a normal iPhone will be near the 1000€ mark, at which price LTPO is not optional, but expected. Like seriously, Samsung is blamed for not really upgrading much on their base models and yet, even they already had it on the S24, 3 years before non-Pro iPhones supposedly get it. On a model that has been selling for less than non-Pro iPhones, too, so price isn't an argument. It's really getting embarrassing. Oh, and despite everything still not having AOD on the cheaper models is just the cherry on top. Let me guess, that comes with the iPhone 20, another 3 years later?

as always with apple nowadays, the budget lines appear to be catching up to the pro models in terms of functionality and there isnt the same gap as there used to be between pro and non pro models.
A few bells and whistles but not blanket differences, perhaps the pro models could get a marginally bigger screen again and perhaps an extra camera to fill that ridiculous rumoured back bezel, give us longer telephoto lens as well and make use of that extra space.

I think the Air will use LTPO since the battery is already small, so the efficiency gains from the variable refresh rate will come in handy

Anonymous, 03 Jun 2025If it can save energy then why doesn't the 16 Pro have... morePro iPhones have binned CPU and GPU, they have more cores activated. Same way they do their Macs and iPads.

Iphone 17's display technology will be LTPO, that has been known for quite some time now.

So basically, a ProMotion screen is a display that supports LTPO + 120Hz. Just like how Dynamic AMOLED 2X is a Super AMOLED screen with HDR10+ certification and the 2X means that it supports twice the normal refresh rate (ie 2 X 60Hz).
So much for marketing gimmicks 🙄

Anonymous, 03 Jun 2025If it can save energy then why doesn't the 16 Pro have... moreVanilla model screens are way less fluid, and their non-Pro CPU is slightly less powerful.
Anyway, LTPO is necessary for any 2025 expensive smartphone, along with USB 3.2.

If it can save energy then why doesn't the 16 Pro have better battery life than the vanilla model?

And theyll go on stage to say AND WE HAVE 120HZ THE FASTEST DISPLAY ON A MOBILE PHONE!
And theyll add a weird name like retina display they do with their displays to make it seem more advanced or different from android displays.

Not even a big deal. LTPO is more power-efficient I suppose, but it won't be a gamechanger. Also, LTPS is better for people sensitive to PWM.
