Apple loses in court, has to stop charging developers for payments outside of the App Store

06 June 2025
It took a 27% cut even if the payment was made through a third party, amazingly enough.

Roberthxx, 07 Jun 2025This means cheaper Spotify? 😂😂😂No. You have not been able to purchase spotify on an iOS device, you could only login to an account that had the purchase already made. There was no Apple tax on spotify. The only thing that changes is they can now advertise on iOS to their website to purchase the account rather than the iOS user having to figure it out.

They too are a for profit corporation? Not even a licensed/REGULATED financial provider aka banks e.g. If you're gonna fanboi, at least make that make sense.

The one big difference is that Apple doesn't share users' credit card information with developers under the App Store billing system. This is good for users' privacy, but bad for the big devs like Spotify who couldn't use payment as a way to track and identify users. Even Elon Musk literally complained about this to Tim Cook (Musk wanted to use cc info as a way to id Twitter users), but Apple stood its ground. Those cc info are a gold mine as it allows real user info and purchase habit tracking.

Good riddance, Apple has been stealing from both developers and customers for way too long.

ThankGodItsFriday, 07 Jun 2025I wonder how this will affect other app stores? 🤔 While it&... moreWhy would this affect other app stores? Here is about developers being suckt dry by apple no matter where they sell their apps. If anything (and of course, if devs do not get greedy) apps will drop in prices for apple users. Well, the apps outside apple store of course. Which will kind of cause some apple employs (ahem, Tim) to bite their thungs for "loosing" anothor small part of their mafia like revenue.
This corporation is slowly getting down to earth, but way to slow, the law makers should accelerate this processes and not only bring them down, but also slap them with fines everytime apple tryies a new method to full cusmtomers and developers. And oh they try every week, every day, 24 hours a day something new to scare customers away from sideloading or trusting other stores. The biggest problem with apple is tough the fact that bought devices are more rentals then owed, as we can all see, the customer does not actually owe the device.

I wonder if we will ever give a thought to the other side or consider one side of the story to be a victory in fair sense. I mean the consequences of Apple losing will gave some merits AND demerits as a consumer directly OR indirectly. Yes, they need to be under check but how much and at what cost to us as consumers is the bigger question.

It took soooo long to give the correct verdict and that Apple should never have been charging so high and also not allowing the developers to make money outside!

                  What an Epic ruling.

                      Good.

Now, slap huge fines on them, say $500 Billion at minimum for their anti-competitive practices and other illegal acts. Same with other companies like Microsoft, Google and Meta.

From my experience, Apple hates 3rd party developers can simply reject all app updates that allows external stores for various other reasons or delay review by "forever".
Once I got rejected for mentioning Android in the changelog (something like "rejection reason - mentioning irrelevant platform").

I wonder how this will affect other app stores? 🤔 While it's great that Apple's tax has been revoked, I would hope that smaller app stores aren't dictated by governments around the world. One has to think of both sides of a situation, not just one, in order to get the full picture.
