Edward Coventry, 09 Jun 2025Fairphone who couldn't figure out how to compile Andro... moreYeah, and the Android 14 update broke bluetooth on the Fairphone 4.

Monthly patches come dangerously late. It's just better to run CalyxOS, but then you are giving up banking support or whatever.

Who wants to be they're gonna take away the memory card slot and set up a "fAiRcLoUd" subscription service?

Anonymous, 09 Jun 2025That sounds like a job for Framework.Doesn't seem like they're interested in handhelds at all.

TrainingAddict, 09 Jun 2025I guarantee you that no one outside this site knows this brand. This brand is well known to the general public in France and the Netherlands.

Looks kind of good. Excited to see the Cloud White variant, and about the two-tone design!

                mae.emery, 09 Jun 2025Found the fairphone employee.He is also Nokia/HMD employee
He is basically a true fan of European made and European rip off

Can you easily unlock bootloader and flash custom ROM or root the fairfone?
Only then would I consider it as an option

Sin, 09 Jun 2025Most phones have 512gb or 1tb storage Fairphone still has... moreWhat do you mean most phones come with 512GB or 1TB ?
These are still in minority of the phones. Brand phones still come as 128GB base version in their flagship and at best get 512GB as the best you can get. This phone have SD card slot so why complain about the size of internal storage ?

Also it's a fairphone that year ago come with custom cpu of SD778

FairPhone brand goal is for easy to repair and easy for user to change battery.
While it's expensive cause the lego construction is made in Europe and the European wages are higher so that adds to the phone price while also give long term OS support. How reliable the software support is, is a different question

Anonymous, 09 Jun 2025Funny you mention software updates as a downside when every... moreFairphone who couldn't figure out how to compile Android 14. Pretty easy to give many years of android updates when your definition of android updates includes not updating android

I like what fairphone stands for but they're a bit too invested in the idea which kinda blindsights them to the fact that repair technicians are ridiculous talented and skilled. They can switch to slightly more complex assembly processes without using adhesive for ingress protection. Plus I'm fairly certain that they can attract a good bit of market by introducing various sizes in Tablets with the ability to add M.2 SSDs, Multiple USB ports, audio port, active cooling and target the enthusiast market.

They've got enough brand recognition and reputation to pull this off.

I'm tired of asking to move the massive chin to the top and place the front-facing camera there. Also, if it had a headphone jack (not to waste money on unrepairable TWS or type-c with built-in inferior DAC)
Otherwise, ZTE Red Magic seems to be the only alternative with all I need for the price I'm ready to pay.

HyperionBurn, 09 Jun 2025no matter how many years of software support/repairability ... moreA worrying proportion of consumers compulsively change their smartphone every year, yet using them for 5 to 7 years before replacing them would have a huge impact on the ecological footprint (around 75% of which is due to the production of the handsets).

So whether it looks like the FP5 back, I doubt it. But perhaps the camera design remains the same.
