Sony already did this with their Xperia 1 iii and then improved the technology with their later phones like the Xperia 1 vi to instead do continuous optical zoom. Not sure if you've seen that.

It's Huawei's website for UAE, scroll down till you see network. And there you will see that 5G is not supported. (Also I checked Pura 70 ultra physically there, if you think their website is giving false Informations, and there was no 5G.) I don't know about south east Asia(except china of course)

At the end of the day, this is still a four-year-old idea revisited and reworked with a newer larger camera sensor. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Huawei's camera R&D department have Xperia phones in their lab. No matter how much you mock Sony phones, it's still Sony who started it all in the first place, and it's always a fact!

It took me a while to understand the telephoto camera setup, but this doesn't look too different from what Sony did with the 2021 Mk3 Xperia 1/5. Those Xperia only has two effective zoom range, and it looks to be a similar story with this particular Huawei phone.

Btw, I don't see any mention about telemacro support for the new model.

And there's still people out there hating on Huawei, a company that brings more innovation to the table than many other companies combined. In such a drought of innovation, Huawei keeps me invested into smartphone tech. Just look at what they've done lately.

The Mate XT Ultimate - first tri fold smartphone on the market, the Pura X - a very different take on a flip-style foldable, the advancements made in satellite communications, and now this, a literal periscope telephoto utilizing two lenses. And this without compromising the rest of the setup, still getting a huge 1" main shooter with a variable aperture.

And all whilst being sanctioned. Truly impressive.

Furthermore, it's likely not a 50 megapixel Bayer sensor, but a 50 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor. Then the 212mm camera basically has a 12.5 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor (or 3 megapixel Bayer sensor, when analog binning is turned on).

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2025Thanks. That's also what Gsmarena's specs mention... moreSurprisingly, this means that the 83mm camera should have a larger effective lens diameter (should be 9.8mm) than the 212mm camera (should be 8.3mm).

Now that is truly incredible, and actually something new never before seen technology. The most impressive technologies are still coming from Huawei, the one company technically so crippled they shouldn't even be in business anymore, yet here they are doing stuff like a telephoto camera sensor with two lenses. Absolutely amazing!

So I guess that the periscope camera uses a 50 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor? Then a crop would be a 12 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor or a 3 megapixel Bayer array with analog binning turned on.

If it used no crop, then the effective lens diameter would be 1.7cm, much larger than the effective diameter of any smartphone camera on the market.
