Too bad they finally decided to jack up imports taxes for Indian products up to 50%, so that the target Apple consumers in the US with Indian-made iPhones (Wingtech factories in Noida and Tirupati) have to pay as twice or thrice their asking price. And that doesn't change the fact that Apple still relies on Wingtech, a Chinese ODM, to both design and manufacture their products since the iPhone 5.

It simply doesn't have that kind of workforce or hourly wage rates to be able to do that. Brace yourselves for a reality check.

Anonymous, 08 Aug 2025Let’s say that’s true: Is uranium or oil funding the USSR w... moreOf course it is. When you engage in any trade there is a flow of money. That money is used as per the need of that country. It doesn't matter what product you're trading. The US has unfortunately always had a policy of arm- twisting other nations which it fears are growing too fast for its comfort. This policy is backfiring quite badly for local consumers in the US for almost all sectors of products ranging from food, electronics and even medicines. The sooner this stops, the better it will be for everyone.

The pandemic taught them that. The slow switch to India was not new. The tarrif only expedited it more after the pandemic.

De-globalization is going to hurt American consumers the most. If you previously paid $999 for the latest iPhone, you will now have to pay much more if it is manufactured locally. This is owing to the USA's higher cost of living, higher minimum wage, increased raw material costs and the need to import several components from other countries (e.g semiconductors). Until the manufacturing process reaches efficiency of scale, the same iPhone could cost about 50-100% more than what it costs currently.

potato4k, 07 Aug 2025You're thinking low skilled manufacturing or textiles.... moreIn theory people could be trained for such kind of manufacturing. In practice it's something that takes both time and money, and I doubt the money that will be gained with tariffs would be used for such kind of training. Or for that matter a meaningful part of those $600 billion Trump wants from the EU.
