Google officially admits that it's given up on tablets

Its reasoning is pretty weird, though.

The only reason why I didn't get it was the 60hz screen. That's crazy outdated, and feels extremelly sluggish.

I also want to add: if Google officially gives up on its tablets, that likely means further AOSP Android optimization for tablets will be stopped. Which is bad.

For me Android just doesn't have good software support.

Nobody is falling for this, shame on you. Google is not giving it up on tablets they're investing in multifunction devices. They're not going to come out with another tablet when they're merging Android and Chrome OS. They're going to introduce a new type of hybrid laptop system that will blow your mind. At least for a week. Ha

              Anyone remember 2011 ???
We had Android leapfrog over iOS in terms of Features and User Experience, with v4.0.3 ICS. With the 4.2inch 16:9 Android Phones being better to use than the 3.5inch 4:3 iPhone. Not to mention the 5.3inch Samsung NOTE. The Custom Rom scene was exploding, as well as Gaming (emulation upto Dreamcast and PSP using a DS3 Controller).

Back then we had a single OS, but with a separate Phone Mode and Tablet Mode. So if you Docked your Phone to a larger screen, you would get the Tablet Controls. That worked really well, and all we lacked was high-end hardware. Then we heard Google was taking ICS further, and pushing out a version for TVs and maybe even Cars. Well, both examples came as custom systems in cheaper Chinese Electronics. Eventually we got AndroidTV and it was a dud. They killed that project soon, just like they killed off Google+ Social Media and Project Q. The automotive project was cancelled until years later when we got Apple CarPlay, with the early versions of AndroidAuto being very poorly implemented.

So yes, Google was on top of the world in Q3-2011 to Q2-2012. They fumbled it HARD.

It is ZERO surprise that they're giving up on tablets. They're somewhat incompetent. Even though there is new interest in the Tablet Market from the latest iPads, Nintendo Switch, Valve SteamDeck, and AYN Odin2 devices.

Esmejo93 , 23 Aug 2025To be honest now more than ever the iPad is leagues ahead o... moreI think there's also an economies of scale problem here. The Pixel Tablet was a pretty good Android equivalent to the base model iPad, but Google's MSRP was $499, while Apple's was $329 in 2023. (Yes, that was partly because Google included a dock, but no one really needed/wanted it.) At a 50% higher price, no one who currently has an iPad is going to switch over. As others have noted, Android tablets simply aren't supported as well as either phones or iPads, even if the hardware might be superior (in the case of the Samsung S Tab series). But because the users aren't there to buy devices in the tens or hundreds of millions, Android OEMs can't cut prices to be lower than Apple.

The net result is that Apple dominates the tablet market so much that even people who are ordinarily in the Android/Windows ecosystem will buy an iPad. As one of the biggest certified Apple haters here, even I have to admit that if I needed to buy a tablet tomorrow, I'd probably end up with an iPad Air, over a Samsung Tab S10, or a deeply discounted Pixel Tablet.
