Anonymous, 15 Oct 2013High end watches have been using sapphire crystals to cover... moreExactly. However, I've been on watch forums a lot and sadly, sapphire is really scratch-proof but it's not shatter-proof (most users say a standard mineral glass is harder to shatter but easier to scratch). I think Gorilla Glass is enough scratch-proof already, but they need to make displays more shatter-proof.

what I don't get is how people are so arrogant and ignorant to to the point that they can't and won't fully understand those type of stuff... i mean, what apple is using now, had been used in other smartphones and mobile phones before, so how dare you still have the courage to affirm that apple is the first.

Theres a synthetic sapphire with high internal strain, cheaper and perfectly functionable for its use in electronics..the price wont rise dramatically

High end watches have been using sapphire crystals to cover watch dials for ages.

Cool but it will definitely increase the price of a smartphone as Sapphire is costly to produce on a large scale.

So how much does this material cost?

I bet that isn't factored into the breakdowns.
