Weekly poll: how should our Phone Finder deal with foldables and their different dimensions?

Could you add a user selected option. Maybe use a graphical representation so it's easier for the user to select which option they want

ProMaxUltraAreBricks, 12 Oct 2025Would be great to have cameras bump thickness too !Th8ckness at camera party wpuld be better, since outward folds would come out bad, while they have most impressive design allowing full thickness.
Simply, bigger thickness of phone for camera part could indicate bigger sensors... mean8ng better cameras..
Well, its not always true, but more or less helps.

Folded thickness because: it can be used also folded, folding tech can make it thicker, there are 2 folds and 3 folds, soon may be also something different.
Unfolded width height because: I dont use this but I would guess one use it to define how big the screen is when unfolded. If its about your pocket, height stays the same, while width is getting bigger, meaning I should choose f9lded dimensions 😆 sorry

Just add Filters for unfolded dimensions that only apply when setting the type to 'folding' ?
Width: it's about holding your phone in 1 hand without a popsocket/ring and being able to reach sufficient areas with the thumb while maintaining a sucre grip.
Thickness? never understoof this. I'd gladly have +1mm if this means +10% battery. The camera nump is thicker anyways - and depending on the phones camera arrangement this results in being wobbly when typing while it's lying on a table.

The thickness of the phone should include the camera. Please use the thickest part of the phone as the thickness of the phone. The screen size of a folding screen mobile phone is the expanded size, and the combined thickness standard includes the thickness of the thickest part of the camera. It is unscientific to exclude cameras by thickness.

It's a tough one bc but I think you should use the folded state for book style foldables and the unfolded state for flips. Majority of the time when you use a book style foldable you're using the outside screen, and with flips it's the inside screen.
Another solution that's takes more effort is making a seperate section with more specific search filters for foldables. So in the phone finder you'll have phones tablets and foldables.

gingermark, 12 Oct 2025For book-style foldables I'd go for the folded dimensi... moreYes, but if I want a foldable under 5mm thick when unfolded, how can I do that? Right now, I can't.
Also, why are we worrying about this when the Dimensity 7400 is not in the SoC list in phone finder, even though the 7400X is (and no, Dimensity 7400 phones don't come up under the 7400X filter)? And there's not a single Unisoc SoC in the list either?

It’s very simple, you only care about measure of folded form factor. People will not carry foldable which is unfolded, so folded weight and measurements is the only what matters here. And nobody cares what measurements are then it’s unfolded, because as soon as you finished using it you will fold it. After all you buying foldable, you already know that unfolded state it will be wider and around 8 inch.

Would it be possible to use both, folded and unfolded, dimensions for the filer? And then maybe it could be shown in the search results which one of the dimensions was used when bringing up the foldable in search results? So for example, if user would search for phones that are max 8.5mm thick, they would get Samsung’s Fold 7 as one of the search results and there would be text next to it telling that the filter matched for unfolded dimensions of the device

Why do you overcomplicate things?
Make a clickable button for foldables and then the user chooses whether to put folded or unfolded.
Something like:
Include foldables? Yes/no
Pressing yes opens fields for folded and unfolded.
User doesn't have to fill in all fields.
Some only care about width, so it's not too wide, others about thickness or height.

Suggestion:
Have an unfolded UI checkbox. - so shows either the folded or unfolded dimensions.
As a bonus have a drop-down menu near the dimensions: all, clamshell, book folding, all folding only phones.

For book-style foldables I'd go for the folded dimensions, but use the unfolded flip-style ones. That way, at least you're comparing similar dimensions compared to regular phones.

I think foldable flip phone can be classified under "Flip up" form factor category. After all, today's flip phone are so different than the days of SymbianOS (save for the modern feature flip phones running on KaiOS).
Having said that, since foldable phones are meant to be used when unfolded, I went for the fourth option.

Just put foldables in a completely separate category and then add as many custom filters for them as needed. Most people know if they want a folding phone or not before they start choosing a specific model.

I've voted folded for both thickness and height/width. My reasoning is that the phone would be folded most of the time in my case. Also I would say folded because it's a mainly phone and then "tablet". Of course use cases will vary.

You should also add to your phone finder the ability to filter phones and tablets by bootloader unlockability. Thanks.

The phone Finder should have the possibility to filter the camera sensor size for each camera I think
