We took the Oppo Find X9 Pro to the Día de los Muertos in Mexico

09 November 2025
It was really quite special, and the Find X9 Pro's imaging system was more than up to the task.

Portraits look good, but many of the landscape shots are smeared into oblivion, example:

Anonymous, 10 Nov 2025What does "Master Mode" do?It's essentially the secondary auto mode in Oppo's camera app. It has much less aggressive tonemapping (Sometimes none) and a much softer, undersaturated colour to mimic SOOC JPEGs from Hasselblad cameras. It also goes significantly easier on sharpening, and comes with a set of user-adjustable post-processing parameters as well as optional softening filters that aren't available in the main auto mode.

Rkm, 10 Nov 2025Lmao, you obviously got triggered because it is your articl... moreEven this explanation doesn't make much sense as they would only need a few samples to showcase a difference between the default auto mode and alternative modes/user-adjusted modes. For instance, on Find X9 Pro, 2 photos (One in 12MP, the other in 50MP) from each preset focal length (0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 6x, 10x) would be more than enough to show the difference between auto mode and Master Mode.

Which part of this comment of Rkm do you consider as "whining"? It is true that your phone reviews are becoming increasingly less specific over the years. Older review formats contained more benchmarks (e.g. GFXBench, Basemark) and dived into more intricate software features that other sites often missed. There used to be a studio comparison tool to compare both photo and video quality in a standardised format, which you abandoned with whilist offering no explanation to the readers. When manufacturers are putting more and more features, options and alternative modes to their camera apps, you're going in the opposite direction and covering fewer of them in your reviews.

Was it really *that* hard for you to spend the time you used to find and post the GIF to give them even a very brief explanation instead, such as, I don't know, "The number of phones we're reviewing is slowly increasing, therefore we have to keep the reviews more concise"? The way you're responding to Rkm's comment isn't really doing yourself any favour at the moment.

Some photos are horribly aliased, all straight lines are draw like saws. There are photos with horizontal lines in some of it's parts. Some photos are simple a bunch of blotches mashed together.

                Are people not seeing that?

At least those are software issues, whatever processing Oppo tried to add here can be undone. Maybe they could go back to the preceding they where using last year.

"Still, you should at least mention the available modes. If describing or reviewing them in detail is difficult, just share two or three samples from each mode and let us decide for ourselves. IMO, photos 8, 9 & 10 from this review would be apt examples as they’re taken indoors and provide enough challenge to highlight differences in exposure, contrast, and color. No opinions needed, just post the samples and let the readers decide for themselves, since photographic tastes are subjective."

I did ask gsmarena on Vivo x300 review why you stopped and here is what Mr.Chavdar replied
"Can't really describe all the camera modes without testing them. Our standard set of camera samples for every review is around 200 images - imagine doing a second or a third set in any of the extra parameters - be it in a different Zeiss/Leica color mode or with less sharpening or with more something else."

So, you admit to not testing it which wasn't the case before. There is a definite reduction in standards to meet deadlines. There is no getting away from it. It's alright, there are better sources available elsewhere. You can't get everything from a single source.

It is bette... moreYou're right, it's actually crazy how little effort they put into the camera section of their reviews nowadays. Not only is their new place a massive downgrade from their previous work site when it comes to testing out real-life camera performance (The balcony scene and the hotel scene were excellent to see phones' handling of moire and natural detail, respectively), but they completely abandoned the studio comparison roughly at the same time, AND they now put far less effort into exploring different modes and shooting options. A complete omission of Master Mode on Find X9 Pro and X8 Ultra, and Zeiss Color + film preset modes on X300 Pro/X200 Ultra reviews aren't excusable in any way.

The only thing that is keeping me from their camera reviews is the fact that they provide full-res samples without locking them behind any kind of paywall. It's a bit embarrassing that even random Twitter posts made by owners of Find X9 Pro point out a LOT of stuff that this review misses out on (e.g. X-PAN mode uses colour rendition that is closer to Master Mode than to auto mode, 200MP mode is specifically optimised for human faces, Oppo's auto night mode is less trigger-prone than that of Xiaomi and Vivo's, the entire existence of action mode, etc).
